Esports is already popular in South Korea, the United States and Europe, but not in Japan where online competitive gaming is just beginning to gain popularity despite the country being home to famous game titles and a large gaming market.

Because Japanese internet is absolutely c*** for playing online games. Also everyone is play dungeons and dragons, monster hunter or pokego. It seems like shooting games don't have a lot of appeal to the Japanese public.

There is a gaming senmon gakko in Akihabara, but yeah, the most popular games in Japan are not used in competitive gaming. Most game play in Japan are on phones.

PC gaming isn't big in Japan, but the biggest e-sports games are PC- and team-based where Japan hardly has any footprint in production or participation

Lots of misinformation here. Japanese are most definitely doing ESportsGaming. It's kind of like saying Americans don't like soccer, when in fact, almost every Saturday and Sunday the parks are full of AYSO leagues and other inter-city organizations.

Japanese players are playing online multiplayer games far more often than one would think. As for the speed of the internet service here, it is not below standard. The truth is, internet bandwidth is above average here as I often play across global servers.

If you want to see bad Internet, go to New Zealand.

According to Japan eSports Union (JeSU) chief director Itsuki Murano told The Hollywood Reporter:

"Japan has just over 100 eSports pros and fewer than 10,000 players in total"
