Expanding to cloudy services to address spot-increases in computing resources is smart, but ONLY using cloudy services is a bad idea if you want up-time beyond 90%.
IoT stuff is worrisome for all sorts of reasons, not just the ability to keep that stuff working. Buying things that require the internet to work that are strictly for use at home makes little sense.
Why does a thermostat or vacuum need internet? It doesn't. It is just for tracking.
