They mustn't be doing it right ...

Comparing apples and oranges. Checking FB/Twitter involves a fresh interaction each time. If we had a fresh sex partner each time it might be a different result in the survey.

Only people who would rather spend time on facebook than sex. Are people who can't get sex or has a crap partner in bed.

Something's not right. Maybe because the geeks that are addicted to twitter have no social skills. But if they had a computer on one side, and a hot lady on another, willing and eager to do anything, I doubt too many people would choose the computer.

If a significant number of people did choose Twitter over readily available sex? Man, society is doomed.

Hot ladies do nothing for me.

The study seems designed to produce the results it did. Most people have no problem checking stuff on their computer or smart phone in the midst of doing other stuff - it's easy, no need to resist temptation. But staving off the urge for sex in everyday life is normal - we don't go jumping into the bushes at the slightest tingle, especially when we and/or our partner are busy trying to earn a living. If your partner is miles away for most of the day, there's no option but to resist temptation, however strong the urge may be.

A bit of a sensationalist study, if you ask me.

I've been married twelve years and I still check Twitter every six months.

I'll take 'em 18 to 50, long legs, curvy and pretty. You can keep Twitter and Facebook.

Who cares? Human beings carry out their own micro surveys every time they meet someone.

All right hold on just one minute......

Sex with who?

"a study arousing interest online"

Har!

"stronger than sex and cigarettes in terms of temptation"

The women who say this have never had sex with me.

Stronger than cigarettes?! Now that's strong!

"But staving off the urge for sex in everyday life is normal - we don't go jumping into the bushes at the slightest tingle,"

Actually, you'd be surprised.

"People ranging in age from 18 to 85 took part in the poll by using smartphones to regularly update researchers regarding their cravings to check in with online communities.Study participants were also asked to track hankerings for sex, alcohol, cigarettes, or other gratification."

So...how was this done exactly? Does this mean they expected people to send a text message "I'm craving sex right now", or ""I really need to look at twitter".

How many people would feel comfortable sending a message by their smart phone saying they crave sex. Especially the 85 yr old women?

Truly bizarre study.

Great use of the word "hankerings".

Definitely. Avoiding a social desirability bias is practically the first consideration in sex or smoking-related questionnaires. Obviously more people are going to admit "craving" the "temptation to work" (whatever that means) than to get laid. It's also arguable that answers from heavy Twitter and Facebook users will be more subject to this tendency to answer questions in a way that will be viewed favourably by the researchers, in the same way they interact with their friends and followers online.

This is a ridiculous survey. I mean I don't sit there thinking.... hmmmm... my wife looks pretty alluring at the moment and I'm starting to feel pretty randy, but I've just GOT to check my Facebook and do some tweeting, so no sex today!

What's more, I mean, if you REALLY need both at the exact same time you could twitter while you're going at it! :)

Twitter or sex??? Geez!! I can't resist looking at Twitter???? NOT!? By the way, I hate Twitter but think Facebook and Viber are good but better than sex???????

combine all the 'addictions' here and it gets you one word 'escape' or escapism. To run away for avoid facing oneself, which is indeed very hard when it comes to sex since you have to 'open up' to another and not just as a figure of speech sad state of the world, weakness

I don't see the point of Twatter and Facebook is just... I don't know, boring. I'll stick to interacting on a more personal level.

The past: Honey...let's get our groove on. No, not now...I have a headache. The present: Honey...let's get our groove on. No, not now, I have to check Facebook and Twitter.
