This runs directly counter to their entire revenue model, and changing that will be like turning the Titanic. Assuming this is even a sincere goal for the company: I'll believe it when I see it.

There are few good questions to ask ourself... and the first one is... "do you really need facebook?" :D

Social media is the garbage of the internet tbh....

Too little, too late. Even if he's telling the truth, which I highly doubt.

with their intimate thoughts and pictures shielded by encryption in ways that Facebook itself can't read

But will these messages and pictures be shielded by ad companies? I very much doubt it. Facebook itself might not be able to bypass the encryption, but it doesn't need to. Zuckerberg will give the keys to ad companies so that they can continue viewing your messages and images, and spamming you with ads. It's how Facebook makes its money, so there's no way in Hell they're going to bite the hand that feeds them.

But Zuckerberg didn't suggest any changes to Facebook's core newsfeed-and-groups-based service

This needs changing more than anything else, but again it's the main source of ad revenue for Facebook, so it's never going to change.

You want to stop being bombarded by ads? Delete Facebook. That's the surest way to get that freedom from ads.

Whilst there's little doubt about the latter, how does the former manifest itself? It's a massive capitalist business where staffers get to enjoy perks and contractors are often treated shoddily. Not entirely sure how FB fits in with the communist manifesto.

Um...

Communism is a political ideology. Facebook is a business that operates and profits from a commercial system.

How exactly can a commercial business be Communist?

End-to-end encryption stores the encryption keys on the ends - ie the devices of the sender and recipient. Thre reason why it says that Facebook can't read them, and doesn't say Facebook won't read them, is because they don't have the keys to decrypt the messages even if they wanted to.

So your theory that they will give the keys to ad companies is unfounded, as they don't have the keys to give even if they wanted to.

One also needs to be aware that if my memory serves me and the data I saw in corporate ownership page some time ago are correct, FB also owns WhatsApp and Messenger. FB was said to be planning to "combine" FB, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. If anyone has a better internet ability for research than what I can, then please do find out. FB is in effect behind much of the social media and communication related sites.

It is similar to what I believe Expedia.com owning Orbits.com, Hotwire.com, Hotels.com and a whole bunch of regional internet travel booking sites.

Which all brings us to question the reliability and trustworthiness of the internet giants when they "control" the market as if a monopoly. They have access to so much information and control the sourcing, the dissemination and the use of such information in and on the "vast" internet. It certainly appears to open the doors for "manipulation".

Facebook & other similar social media outlets are going to be the downfall of our society. Ban them all !

@fujimori

LINE chat is end to end encrypted (each pair of users has a unique. key) so it does not matter where their servers are located. It is a concept pioneered by Blackberry for email. Completely unlike Facebook messenger and Gmail for example.

Facebook is a business yes, way to go for stating the obvious! Clap to you!

It's their ideals on the platform, silencing conservative groups even in Japan, deleting posts, monitoring everything you do, if that doesn't sound communist enough, then think again

It seems you don’t know what communism is, because none of those things have anything to do with it.

Facebook messenger uses end-to-end encryption, same as Line.

If you value your privacy, simply don't use Facebook.
