Data wants to be free. A tiny database error is all it takes to make private data, public. It happens all the time.

It is easy to rent thousands of servers around the world to create fake accounts, gather data. This is done all the time. There are specialized companies who do just this and sell the metadata. Every week, they flush the old servers and get new ones - moving targets are harder to find.

Whatever Facebook says, I assume any information they have on users is readily available to the IRS, CIA or any other government agency that wants it. The same is probably true of all large internet companies.

There are many interesting projects that are working on decentralizing the internet, so that info doesn't rely on one server or company. But I think people will be too lazy to care. So Facebook and Google will continue to be best friends with our overlords.
