Yawn. Just goes to show you can prove practically anything with a survey. Facebook, and every other SNS, is just tapping into human beings' tendency to mindlessly follow the herd instinct. I refuse to be a moo-cow and chew my cud with one of these dopey things. Likewise for Twitter.

“It’s really reshaping how people maintain their networks,” Hampton said.

Is this cyberspeak for having a social life in the Brave New World?

FB is just a tool, like any other tool, and whether the tool has positive results or not does not depend on the tool itself but on the people who are using it. As Virtuoso said, some people flock to it because they "follow the herd instinct". Other people interact with many kinds of people, so they are able to see new points of view, something they wouldn't be able to achieve in just one-on-one interaction type. Some people want to sever ties with people from their past, others want to maintain them. So, what does this survey say? People who are on Facebook have more relationships. This is just a confirmation of what people had known - if you want to maintain your relationships, get on FB, and if you want the world to leave it alone, leave the FB alone. Either way, I guess there is no reason to blame FB for the choices WE are making.

I love facebook, it's the best way for me to keep in touch with all of my family and friends back in the US for free.

Facebook is awesome! It allows me to keep in touch with family and friends all over the world much easier than email or telephone does!

Having been in Tokyo for 20 years (straight out of uni) means that FB has allowed me to reconnect with all kinds of friends from high school, university, and various countries. While many aren't into FB, that's their choice and I respect that. But for me, FB has been a godsend and I have no regrets having used it almost daily for the past few years.

Never touch it. Why should I have to make a huge page to stay in touch with everyone I love and know when I can SKYPE them? I do not want to believe that family and friends are seeing me and what I am about here, I want it live so I can talk and be live! Works on my MacBook, iPhone and iPad 2. Do not need face book at all. Waste of band width and time. Live on SKYPE rocks
