One of the nice things about Mixi was the communities. They were a lot better than Facebook's trash. People actively joined them instead of being added by random people, and a lot of people had offline meetings within the groups. I've never seen this with Facebook's groups. Facebook even used to penalizing you for adding 'unknown' friends.

Hopefully FB's new group ideas make it easier to meet up and hang out with new people with similar interests.

Why on earth do people want to use Facebook and reveal everything about themselves to Strangers ?

the task of boosting membership in "meaningful" groups

And of course Facebook would NEVER censor what groups are even allowed to exist. Or its algorithm would never be tweaked to ignore certain types of groups even if they had larger numbers then more PC groups.

It is just more social engineering by people who believe that they know what is best for everyone else and feel that suppressing ideas they don't like is perfectly acceptable.

Facebook started up as a School boy computerising the end of year class photos, then turned into something a bit more sinister that entices you to write everything in detail about your Life and your Friends, etc. It's really a first stop place for anyone looking to find out about you, and if they're aiming to perform some fraudulent act, you're really simply giving them everything they need to know. Furthermore, the comments the Trolls leave, really do cause harm to a lot of people - especially Kids. And, to rub it in, if your Kid dies, (suicide or whatever) Facebook wont give you (the parent) access to your Kids Account...

Why do we have Data protection rules and yet allow Facebook ?

Agreed with Mike O'Brien, though a lot of companies will also tweak their Social media/Support Groups to make things look better for themselves. Apples, for example does that within their Support groups.
