Japanese government already prohibited the use of Chinese 5G equipment in Japan.

The problem facing Japanese telco is the use of Samsung 5G equipment, due to the recent fall out of relations between Japan and Korea. Samsung had no. 2 LTE equipment market share in Japan.

As far as Japanese are concerned, Samsung represent same national security threat to Japan as Huawei does.

Just anything can be viewed or labelled a security risk to suit or hide the real motive and instill fear in the populace.

Japan needs to have fast free wifi internet first for visitors.

As hillclimber says, the 5G so far will be irrelevant stuff like higher res on Youtube or better gaming in a very small area.

Ultra-low latency, super high bandwidth with bulletproof uptime, the level of service that will power autonomous vehicles, remote controlled factories, and telesurgery, is still years away.

Probably the same as 60 minutes.

Thanks for the laugh, Zichi!

Why is Japan talking 5G as a future technology while Korea already has 2 million 5G subscribers?

Why is Japan talking 5G as a future technology while Korea already has 2 million 5G subscribers?

Because it is future technology which SK first adopted. Many other nations only just have or about to launch 5G services. It is pretty much future tech when most of the global smartphone users aren’t on it regardless of how many SK are subscribed to 5G.

Unfortunately, Japan is behind.

If the speed will be 100 times faster. How much will one hour of internet cost

@Tawkeeo

Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong but Apple's newest iPhones don't have 5G capabilities. Doesn't that mean something?

Yes, it means that Apple is at least two years behind the leaders Samsung and Huawei and why it is in 4th place worldwide. Tokyo better have 5G up and running for the Olympics or it will look like a tech backwater.

Just what Jaoan needs: More people walking around with their faces shoved into their phones playing video games or reading comics.

5G coverage is abysmal and won't be able to compete with 4G for years to come

This is what we heard about digital networks, 2G, 3G, and 4G.

@Akie

At what, exactly?

I love that people are saying that Japan is behind other nations when it comes to 5G, when really, only South Korea was properly implemented that network so quickly for who know what reason (trying to prove they're better than the Americans at technology, maybe? Dunno). 5G is still, by and large, at its infancy. Plus, 4G is perfectly fine as is, at least for now. Japan sticks to what works well and refines it. No need to get the latest thing just for the heck of it. Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong but Apple's newest iPhones don't have 5G capabilities. Doesn't that mean something?

@happyhere

Yet Apple is the one Samsung and Huawei constantly copy and follow. I'm not an Apple fan and couldn't care less for that company but I'm stating the facts. It's like saying that, 8K being the latest and greatest TV resolution, why isn't everyone using it and adopting it? Doesn't work that way.

As for your comment about Japan being a tech backwater place... I'd love to write an essay explaining how that isn't the case, but I understand that it's like adding fuel to the fire, so I won't.

@Tawkeeo

I see, Samsung and Huawei copied 5G from Apple? Please explain.

Also please write your essay on how Japan is leading the world on consumer electronics. Love to read it.

Japan has been moving away from consumer electonics for about 2 decades. Japan concentrates on circuitry and materials that only Japanese companies can make because they are knowledge/know-how and capital intensive. This will be the approach to 5G and after. You won't see a Japanese company's name on the product, but the innards will be Japanese made. Japanese companies still make 80% to 90% of chip-grade silicon.

too much 5G hype, its a way off yet, the grass is always greener

I'll keep it short n sweet.

As others have said, it's true that Japan doesn't enjoy, or try to have again, the absolute tech dominance they had in the 80s and 90s when it comes to consumer electronics. I never denied that or try to say it's false. With the emergence of China, South Korea, and even the US as huge tech superpowers, Japan's... fall from the very top was bound to happen.

However.

They've stayed one of the big 4 tech leaders (J, SK, Ch, US) by concentrating on things they're best at. Oh, and also innovating in some industries way before others. A few examples of the top of my head:

They make some the world's greatest audio products, from some of the best headphones in the world (Sony WH1000XM3 & Audio Technica ATHMSR7 for example), to higher end audio products that SK and China either simply don't make or have tried and failed (amplifiers, receivers, turntables, speakers from companies like Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer (DJ), Sony, Yamaha etc)

They're essentially the only maker of cameras in the world, no need to mention brands. Japan's tech expertise in this area make it impossible for foreign companies to try and break Japan's monopoly in this market.

They make the world's greatest games consoles, although I'd understand if you didn't consider that high tech.

As another person here has said, they also innovate with products like enormous TVs (like the ones from Sony and Sharp), transparent TVs (like the one from Panasonic), and even beating everyone in quite a few smartphone technologies and achievements - bezelless smartphone (Sharp), eye or face unlock or something like that (Fujitsu), cameras with tons of megapixels (Sony way back in the day), etc etc.

Short n sweet my rear. I know.

As pointed out above, 5G is a long way off being ready. As is often the case .... too much hype

suggest you watch this video (background to why Apple is not rushing to use 5G ... the infrastructure isn't there yet)

5G for currency only It's not a problem.

There is no difference in 4G or 5G until you see a movie, but it will change a lot when you reach the 3D level. That's not just for mobile phones,

The latest AI, security systems, semiconductors, drones, and everything else in the latest technologies is 5G.

I know that not only Korea, but also many other countries are building and commercializing 5G. It makes no sense that Japan is a technological power and falls behind.

Is Japan going to use Huawei? Glad to see we are taking our own path and ignoring US accusations against Huawei (which is just to help the much less competitive US companies). The future is China.
