With the salaries Japanese companies are trying to get people to work for them there is little talent outside of India that can be found. Lack of competition inside of Japan surely makes the country lags behind the rest of the developed world, but the way they expect quality work for tiny salaries is not making things go faster in any way.

Operating in India is not without risk as India looks to be the next China, emulating Xi's acquisition of IP and skills. Modi has been targeting Chinese tech firms operating in India and demanding data access from Western tech firms to the point at which some are pulling out. He wants Indians to work for Indian tech firms. Using foreign companies as a springboard is fine. If you think you are getting the best out of the deal, you might be in for a shock.

They don’t rush to tap India’s “talent” but they are tapping the willingness of people there to work for almost nothing. This article tries to put a positive spin on things but it’s exploitation.

Lots of salty comments here.

There is no dearth of people willing to work for peanuts in India, however the article mentions the other end of the spectrum as far as tech talent is concerned.

If folks think an IITian (if graduating from top 5 IITs in Computer/Electronics/Electrical engineering) will settle for low salaries they need a reality check.

There is a war on IIT campuses for top end talent during placement season and with American tech companies coming with 6 figure dollar packages and a chance to live in the US, it’s clear that Japanese companies need to offer something special to stay competitive.

Modi has been targeting Chinese tech firms operating in India

Among the few good things that Modi is doing. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

and demanding data access from Western tech firms to the point at which some are pulling out.

Only VPN companies are pulling out. Firms like Amazon, Google, FB will never pull out of a country with the worlds second largest population.

Modi is not on speaking terms with Jeff Bezos because Washington Post has been publishing articles critical of Modi but Amazon will never think of pulling out of India considering the amount of business they do there and the huge market which is still growing.

He wants Indians to work for Indian tech firms.

As far as IT is concerned, only those who can’t get jobs in American or European companies or the startups or financial sector end up working for Indian IT firms.

They are rightly called WITCHes (Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Cognizant, HCL) - mass employers competing with each other for lower pay.

Whatever Modi wants he surely is not stupid to force Indians to work for companies they don’t want to work for. That’s not how democracy works, even if it’s flawed.

The whole article smacks of racism.

On the flip side, there are human rights abuses against women and Muslims in his country.

Opening a new office will also enable Mercari to retain talent by providing its employees the flexibility of working in India and Japan, 34-year-old Bhatkar explained.

“Flexibility”, well the skeptic in me thought that the plan there is to send the workers back to India, and pay them less in the bargain.

Yet more Offshoring, so little wonder over the past 20 years there has been little interest from the Younger Generation in taking up a Career, that's likely to be offshored.

And sadly, from experience, when you have an Indian Hiring Manager, their preference is simply to hire other Indians, culturally more fitting for them.

E-commerce giant Rakuten Group Inc also employs many Indians. An official said that of the 20 percent foreign staff at its Japan offices, around 1,000 hail from India.

Even with the 1,000 indians their website is worst than a maze. It makes no difference

if the foreign talents are forced to work like robots that is do as they are told, their

talents will never be manifested. Mercari and Yahoo marketplace their systems are not

any better.

It’s quite a bit overestimated. The quantity of capable staff might be impressive, but that’s only in proportion to the higher population too. They are also cooking only with normal water so to say and you will see that not all are the top of the crop. You just can employ some more because they are cheaper on average, but you will still need the same luck to find a real IT or programming pearl in the whole net of caught fish out of that big ocean.

The other danger of a Large Indian Employee base, is the Politics that come with it. I witnessed (in Japan) Racial abuse between Indian Hindus and their minority Muslim counterparts, The coerced "Pink" / "Saffron" days, were way out of place, and even seeing Western/Japanese employees joining in, was somewhat dismal - stupid ignorance upon the significance of such days - it's akin to flying the Swastika within such Companies. Japanese local management doesn't either realize this or simply doesn't care (maybe perhaps historically due to their own Historical ties to the German Swastika). Who knows, but such events do not belong within the Modern day workplace.
