A year ago, Google claimed their gross revenues in Australia were AUS$4.2B. https://www.adnews.com.au/news/google-now-pulls-4-2-billion-a-year-from-australia

Google shifts much of that money to Singapore because 10% business tax is better than 30% tax. Costs of sales are in Singapore, not Australia.

After income tax, Google Australia recorded a profit of $129.458 million

The Australian Google gets commissions on sales from Australia which are paid to the Singapore company. Slimy? Probably. Illegal? Google's tax attorney's would say nope.

Ernst and Young audited the Australian Google financial statements.

Was the Diverted Profits Tax law passed? Appears it was in 2017. That lets Australian tax authority tax the companies abusing the profit shifting by 40%. Get them, but be certain to get Facebook, Twitter, and all the other companies, including Australian ones, in the same way.

....no. That wasn't the claim. Google made AUS$10M from advertising on news-link sights. That's very different than the totals made by Google. It is a specific sub-sub-sub-type of advertising on specific types of pages.

Thanks. I understand that and should have made my post to reflect it. Nevertheless I find their claim hard to believe.

Well nobody could expect Google to support the calls. No business would. In fact every business in the world would do everything it could to avoid paying anything but a token payment. Big business is not about being fair its about taking advantage as often as you can for as much as you can. And when cornered play the victim card. This is so unfair to us, (crocodile tears).

No sympathy for Google here.

Australians are asking to be paid for the convenience of having google organize their news. They can stop. Learn to use RSS feed readers and point those directly at the sources.

Australian lawmakers can put a 10%-80% revenue sharing law into place too. See what all online news aggregation services do with that. The revenue sharing comes down to how much "advertising" for the content creators means to Australia. Of course, that could backfire and get the sites blacklisted. Would that serve the public?

I don't have any answer. Perhaps 15 stories in the last 12 months that I can recall were in Australian newspapers/online, but I'm not Australian.

She said Google last year earned just Aus$10 million in revenue......(in Australia)

She expects anyone to believe that?
