The only way I would ever buy one of these self-driving cars is if my age or health prevented me from regular driving, and if the dealer promised to fix any glitches free for a minumum of at least five years.

still, it is a minor crash. when you compare the number of drunk drivers, inept drivers, people who fall asleep while driving, and the young reckless youth swerving all over the road who cause far more serious accidents, I'll take the self drive car every time.

there have been many accidents with these "driverless" cars, but this is the first time Google/Alphabet has taken any responsibility.

there have been many accidents with these "driverless" cars, but this is the first time Google/Alphabet has taken any responsibility.

That's because this is the first time the google car INITIATED the accident.

“This accident is more proof that robot car technology is not ready for auto pilot and a human driver needs to be able to take over when something goes wrong,” Consumer Watchdog privacy project director John Simpson said in a release.

Ehh... there WAS a driver in the car who ALSO expected the bus to stop, John. It didn't help. I wonder if the bus driver saw the well-marked Google car and figured it wouldn't try to change lanes until the lane was completely clear.

I wonder how much insurance companies charge for cars that can self-drive...

I wonder how much more we will find out about how these not our fault accidents really were after the money has irrevocably started to pour into Google and it contractors

A few years from now people will marvel at the idea of a piloted car.

It should be stressed that both the human and computer made the same mistake, the driver which was in the car also assumed the bus was going to stop or slow down, and would of made the same mistake.

It just shows that human nature cannot be predicted by a computer or human.

The self-driven car wasn't programmed to understand the complexity of driving a large vehicle, such as the bus or a heavy truck.

Well I tried it with my Toyota Hilux in 2003 using sat nav and radar total failure then because of a little/big problem accuracy of global positioning then was 2mtrs out so going around bends was a nightmare compared to using radio control that had a human element in it. The radar positioning worked fine keeping front and rear gaps at a safe driving distance including cruise control for speed limitations

I wonder how much insurance companies charge for cars that can self-drive... now not sure but in say 5-10 years when the tech is mouch improved Id say the insurance companies will give you a discount compared to a human driver. a computer will never get drunk, sleepy, speed, take its attention off the road. self driving cars will have far fewer crashes compared to human drivers so its natural that the insurance willbe cheaper also.
