But it won’t be necessary to have a Nexus phone to get Marshmallow. People who own an Android phone released in the past few years will receive a the option to install a free upgrade beginning next week.

So I won't have to wait until the manufacturer releases a tailored update?

Haaa Nemui I think the article stated this carelessly. It will take a while for Japanese carriers to make a version of this for their phones, if they make an upgrade at all.

@Michael Werker. No, they already have a model that uses the bands for Japan and is available on Play Store.

It'll be interesting to see will Google try to make the Nexus 5X and 6P fully compatible with the NTT docomo Osaifu-Keitai standard for NFC mobile payments. If they do, these new phones will be flying out the door of Japanese retailers.
