How will we know what hydrogen we are putting in our tank? Will it be a different color, or labeled “Ethically sourced” or something?

One good use of hydrogen would be in ships. They run on fuel oil, a highly polluting fuel which is not much better than coal.

No new tech has to be an optimal solution for everything. It just has to be better at doing something. I can't see hydrogen having an all-conquering role, like coal over firewood/charcoal and then oil over coal, but it might be a good way of doing something.

"Hydrogen can make a real contribution to the fight against climate change, but only if it is used properly, in areas where you have no other choices to reduce emissions," says Nicolas Berghmans at IDDRI, a think tank that focuses on sustainable development.

Certain countries or regions (perhaps geographic bowls like Mexico City or the San Francisco Bay area) will benefit the most because of the reduction in both gases and particulates. Plus they have the sunshine to allow for green hydrogen production from renewable solar power.
