When you store information, eventually that information ends up in the hands of criminal. There is no 100% security of information.

Chinese social media is even claiming some people have been receiving scam calls even though they have not received scam calls before. This has the potential to change things in China, and I'm not sure if it'll be for the good of the people, if anything the CCP has probably realised its foes has the same info and will now establish a completely new, more draconian system of monitoring its citizens.

It is ironic because China is one of the leading hacking jurisdictions in the world, although usually from an industrial espionage perspective.

But it shows that China is an electronic surveillance state - everything you do electronically, right down to food deliveries, is logged and stored by the state.

This is just the beginning of the hackers attacking China.

I find it very ironic myself. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”.

Seems only fair, since the CCP stole my OPM data without asking.

Data retained wants to be free. That's the nature of all data stored in any computing device.

Palpatine: It's ironic.

You cannot swing a cat in China without hitting someone from the Ministry of Security.

Since by now the Chinese government already have access to personal information from people all over the world I guess it is fortunate the leak only involved Chinese citizens.

I hope some of those Chinese citizens who's data are compromised are high CCP and government officials

Why would it matter if the leak only involved Chinese citizens if the Chinese government already has access to personal information from people all over the world? Kind of a strange statement.

What is strange about it? if one bad actor has access to your information it can abuse it to advance their goals, if every bad actor has access to your information then each one can abuse it, and many will do it as soon as possible to the maximum degree of profit they can get because another one may try to do it first and make further attempts less profitable or easy.

It matters because the hacker was not apparently linked to the Chinese government. This is data that is now beyond the ability of the Chinese government to control and can be used to steal money and / or identities from Chinese individuals or depending on the nature of the information stolen perhaps blackmail them. There may even be some interesting information on the wealth of high CCP officials and their spending (porn, booze, prostitutes) habits.
