Shipments of Japanese home video game consoles and software in Japan and abroad in 2007 jumped 79.9% from the previous year to 2,936.4 billion yen, marking a record high, an industry group said Monday.
Shipments of game consoles sharply increased by 117.9% to 2,087.8 billion yen, and game software shipments rose 25.9% to 848.7 billion yen, according to the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association.
Brisk sales of Nintendo Co's Wii console and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc's PlayStation 3 machine, both of which were released in late 2006, boosted the shipments, association officials said.
Shipments of portable player increased steadily.
The software market was led by Nintendo's popular game titles Wii Sports and Wii Play, the officials said.
