I used to have a few Hotmail e-mail addresses but M$ made it it harder and harder to set up a new hotmail address using Outlook to monitor them so I finally gave up on hotmail and went to gmail years ago.

Funny that M$ should know come full circle to calling the free e-mail service "Outlook". Oh well, too late for you M$, I'm happy using gmail so unless you can pull a rabbit that gives you the winning lottery numbers in advance of the draw out of your collective butts, you're out of luck.

MS killed Hotmail many, many years ago. I was a Hotmail user before MS bought it, and afterwards it just went downhill.

MS bought Skype. I can see Skype is going downhill now.

Hotmail is dead as Outlook.com takes over

RIP hotmail and sympathy to grim Outlook.

I was happy with Hotmail until it was hacked, then hacked again. Then I thought, Ah, sod it, and picked up sticks and moved to gmail. Mine is one of those "active accounts" they mention. I never closed it, I just cleared it out and left it.

My Hotmail turned into Outlook overnight a few months ago. It looks bland but as long as it does the same things (ie, lets me send and receive emails) I don't really care. As for Skype... I hope that doesn't go downhill... I use that to keep in touch with my ex.

Well, Thunderbird2, there's a story to tell over a beer or 3 right there!

I had to use my beanie in trying to figure out how to use the new Outlook format, but overcame most of my problems ... and thus am still using Hotmail. However, I still can't figure out how to enlarge the type, like from 8 points to 12 points. Otherwise everything seems to be okay ... knock on wood ...

Both hotmail and gmail switched to new formats and I'll be darned if I can figure out how to use them. Way to go guys !

So long as you can still type in "www.hotmail.com" to get there and the end of my email address still reads "@hotmail.com", hotmail is still the same as it ever was -_-

I was (we were) forced to give up MS's Instant Messaging (IM) a month or so ago because MS sort of moved its IM (cannibalized it?) into its latest purchase, Skype.

I like Skype's emoticons, but I also liked IM's emoticons. I wish MS would wake up, combine the two sets of emoticons and just toss out one of any almost-duplicates. Sigh ... MS should change its name to "Engulf & Devour."

I set up my hotmail in '98, but switched to yahoo because hotmail kept wiping my account if I did not sign in every 30 days (back in the day I did not have a PC at home and work blocked access). I logged in recently, but it asked me to change my password to something alpha numeric. I did and have forgotten it!

I remember when Windows came with Outlook Express to enable you to read your Hotmail. Then they did away with that and made you switch to Outlook. Then if you upgraded MS Office, the Home version didn't come with Outlook, you had to buy it seperatley at additional cost. Now I guess MS has gone full circle and have made Outlook a part of the Home Office suite.

Sometimes change is not good. Should have left it alone and not tried to do too much with a good thing.

I've been using outlook for the past few months and it's been fine. Was able to set it up in my email client through imap, and the Skydrive is also really handy.

Dont like gmail because the web version conceals emails in the inbox under the same sender. That makes it impossible to track emails chronologically.

After thinking about the message I wrote here yesterday, I went back into my new Outlook e-mail setup and figured out my final barrier: how to enlarge the type. Well, I did it. Now I have full command over my new Outlook/Hotmail setup. Actually ... it is really easy to use ...

I have one of those walking dead accounts in the 400 million number. Haven't used it for years, after hotmail locked me out of it. Nice way to treat its customers, MS. Used the clunky Gmail for a couple of years and finally found a stable and really useful service in iCloud.com.

I don't like Outlook. Dislike gmail more.

edojin, how do I add a new contact address?

Saxon Salute: go into your address file and type it in. It worked for me ... If you have problems with this, send a message to the address you want to type in, then transfer (I guess this is the correct term...) the address into the proper alphabetical spot in your address file. Be sure to press the "save" button when the address has been set up in your address file.

incidentally, their outlook android app is slightly better than their hotmail one

'Tis a shame, but then, MS doesn't exactly have the Midas touch, so to speak. In fact.... is there an opposite?

Let's be honest. Email spammers killed off Hotmail years ago... to the point that most legitimate places wouldn't allow hotmail email accounts to be used as the contact email.

In the early years Hotmail was Rocket Mail. One of the earliest free online email systems. Then it changed to Hotmail and now to Outlook. Over the years I have not had any problems with any of these three systems. The Hotmail spam filters have always worked well.

It seems to me that the Outlook name here is confused with the email accounts that live on your PC. I have always used online email because learned from experience that hard drives did/do/will crash. I can stil use my account with the hotmail.com extension so the new "upgrade" is not an issue.

hotmail spam filters -work well? like heck! As leaky as a boat load of porcupines. Hotmail forever let spam through, gmail - google on the other hand have excellent spam filters. Hotmail got ditched long ago, especially at the time when gmail was offering 1GB and Hotmail was still stuck on 2MB.

Bye hotmail.....So long and thanks for all the phish
