US protectionism masquerading as security. Sad that other countries are being bullied to go along with it.

What a ridiculous post, you have no idea what you are talking about.

It's going to get even more interesting soon.

SoftBank is considering selling ARM who basically design the and licence the fundamental architecture used in almost all mobile chips. If it is purchased by and American company (Nvidia is in lead negotiations), all Chinese chip firms stand to be cut out of licencing (Huawei, Rockchip, AllWinner etc) and be prevented from producing ARM based chips.

Even Trump haters have to admit this is a stunning victory. Wonderful to see the scam Huawei company - which shares ALL user data with the Communist party - damaged like this due to sanctions.

Lets hope more and more Communist Chinese companies are damaged and even bankrupted by the free world refusing to do business with the Commies.

This is great news! I hope more technology and licenses are removed from China! Let them rot!

US protectionism masquerading as security

If you want REAL protectionism, check out China's "Great Firewall." US tech firms outright banned over many years, while Bejing works on its official communist-party directed "Made in China" strategy to dominate global tech and industry.

How is are US and other countries supposed to respond to that? Watch passively from the sidelines? I don't think so, but then, I'm an anti-globalist who believes in that anachronistic principle called "fairness."

China has taken advantage of the world for what too long. Time to bring her to her knees for awhile before she participates on the world stage again.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

There is ONE reason for the US "decoupling" with China. That is because the US can no longer compete. And don't say, well, Huawei was stealing US tech. Huawei has more than 5,000 US patents. Are they patenting stolen US tech? If so, the US is really stupid

Not as stupid as china. The world would rather see a strong US than a dictator china which murders thousands of Urgur Muslims, Tibetan monks, Christians and Fulongong members.

With Trump, it is ALL about what is good for him, not what is good for the country, the world, or humanity

And you think with china, it's all about what is good for the country, the world, or humanity?

"US protectionism masquerading as security. Sad that other countries are being bullied to go along with it."

So are you claiming China does not engage in cyber espionage, cyber theft or censorship of content, even content created outside China but shown on a Chinese owned platform? Is that what you are saying. Be very clear and very specific.

@Mr Kipling Really?! China is an oppressive Communist regime with a world domination strategy by any and all means possible. Huawei is another example of efforts towards that end. Companies backed my the Chinese regime should be blocked from participation on the word business stage for exactly the reasons outlined in this story.

And let's not get started on human rights! China has gone backwards in the last 50 years in this area.

The world needs to pull away from China as soon as possible before it's too late.

"As brutal as the Chinese Government undoubtedly is, I can't remember them threatening a supposed ally as the US has done to the UK."

The big bad threat you are foaming at the mouth over is the statement by the US that if UK includes Huawei in their 5G network the US would stop sharing their intel with them. From the US view, the risk of that intel being compromised to China is simply too great if Huawei is on their network. That is a legitimate position for the US to take. The public still seems blithely unaware of how aggressive the Chinese are regarding exploiting every possible means to collect data on the west. The little quad copters they sell? Their docking stations can upload flight and camera data to China. A camera carrying quad copter flying near a military base, major port or some major public infrastructure becomes a fantastic near real time surveillance tool for Chinese intel officers to exploit, and they do. Software sold for transit systems likewise has been found to have back doors that allow the Chinese to get in and do things, like maybe disrupt the system or even shut it down during a conflict. The Chinese are playing professional baseball looking to win the World Series while much of the world is treating things like a Sunday softball game and a couple of beers.

China is not Communist. The closest it gets is that the government tries to claim they are.

I agree. We need to spread our eggs in multiple basks, rather than putting them all in the baskets of the superpowers. This means a disconnect from both the US and China by the other nations of the world.

If Trump and Xi have taught us anything it's that we can't afford to prop up these superpower's economies anymore at the sacrifice of our own,

It's time to end the world dependence upon China and the USA.

Well, I guess it just shows that the US isn’t as dependent on China as we thought. In fact in this case, it shows that it can be the other way around as well. In fact, with exports in general, China is actually much more dependent on the US, then they’re given credit for.

It’s nice to know, that when it comes to this sort of stuff, China isn’t the all powerful giant that people have made them out to be for many years now.

No one gains by Trump's trade war with China; it is a lose-lose proposition, and I will be very glad to see the hind side of Trump as he leaves the White House.

This is getting interesting.

Economies are already in shambles because of sars-cov-2, and now trade wars are heating up.

"Economies are already in shambles because of sars-cov-2, and now trade wars are heating up"

Ideal time to make some changes and cut the source of this pandemic out of our economies. Do not forget where this disease came from nor the fact that the CCP diddled around for 11 critical days late last year, suppressing knowledge of the incipient pandemic, arresting doctors who had the temerity to tell colleagues something bad was afoot and generally letting it get out of control. Now we all suffer for it. To hades with China. Boycott them entirely. The world doesn't need them that bad. Never forget and never, ever forgive.

"There is ONE reason for the US "decoupling" with China. That is because the US can no longer compete. "

Only if you consider stealing from your competitors to be "competition". US, Japanese and European companies came by their technologies through hard work. China killed or drove off all their smart people who should now be their senior engineers and scientists during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Lacking the talent the west and Japan have, they instead resort to theft to get ahead. I don't see that the US or any other nation should feel obliged to accommodate the Chinese. Boycott them. Better yet, 100% trade, travel and communications embargo. China has nobody to blame but themselves.

Have you not looked into China since the '80s? Tim Cook, CEO of Apple:

The products we do require really advanced tooling, and the precision that you have to have, the tooling and working with the materials that we do are state of the art. And the tooling skill is very deep here. In the U.S., you could have a meeting of tooling engineers and I'm not sure we could fill the room. In China, you could fill multiple football fields.

China most definitely has talent and skills. They have a supply of skilled labor other countries can't match, on top of their cheap labor (which isn't as cheap as it once was).

Great!

Next Step Russia.

The British government bowed to growing U.S. pressure and pledged earlier this month to remove Huawei from its 5G network by 2027, despite warnings of retaliation from Beijing.

Successive British Conservative governments were more than happy to have Huawei involved in the 5G network until the gangster in the White House blackmailed Boris Johnson over the current US/UK trade talks.

As brutal as the Chinese Government undoubtedly is, I can't remember them threatening a supposed ally as the US has done to the UK.

Anyway, the US will be out of the game in 6 or 8 years, and then the world can readjust to the reality of the rise of China, which the US is trying to stop.

I suspect that the real reason Trump did this was because China refused to cooperate in his efforts to create a false narrative about Biden, and because China refused to give Trump a big enough bribe.

With Trump, it is ALL about what is good for him, not what is good for the country, the world, or humanity.
