It is not likely this is in consideration, I read this more like a way to harvesting resources for a closed environment, Every bit of water or oxygen that can be produced on Mars is something that doesn't have to be brought all the way from Earth.

Mars does not have a magnetic field so even though the sun is far away, protection from radiation is just as crucial as producing water and oxygen if we are to set up closed colonies above and below ground.

I agree. The fact that the process also produces carbon monoxide doesn't sound like a way to create a breathable atmosphere.

Then why are we going there? It is like planning your big vacation in Siberia.

I don't see any harm in going for a scientific trip, like with the moon. But going there to try and set up a colony, with current technology, would be pointless.

These may be the first steps in ‘the terraforming and colonization of another world’. Yet, any introduction of our ‘atmosphere’ makes us ‘the alien invaders’. Let’s hope they understand, “We come in peace.”

Mars' gravity isn't likely to be capable of supporting an Earth-like atmosphere, as it would be blown away by solar winds. Additionally, because Mars is so far from the sun, the average temperature is about -63C.

Cool. Now get a bunch of them over there and make an atmosphere for humans to breathe!
