as long as movies are approaching $20 a view piracy will continue whether there is a Mega or not.

Make movies $5 to download though and the need to put yourself into a position of liability dies along with the old studio business model of lawyers and scammers.

filmmakers and songwriters lost around $500 million in copyright revenue

BULL!

because how can I control something if I don’t know that it’s there?

Sounds like a good argument to me. I mean seriously, banks don't go rifling through individual's safe deposit boxes, the mailman doesn't open your mail and check it, etc. Why shouldn't private information be private? That's all this service is effectively offering, a digital safe deposit box that can be accessed by anyone with the code.

Seriously, copyright is NOT a license to strip everyone in existence of the right to privacy. What's next? R&D companies arguing that employees have to be monitored 24/7 in case they mention what they're working on?

Talking of copyright breaches, you have one at the end of the story, but there isn't one on the AP site or Yahoo, where this EXACT story resides!

What is the difference between Megaupload, Dropbox and Google Drive? Double standards?

Hail Kim Dotcom...

“Sometimes good things come out of terrible events,” Dotcom said.

There are millions of people on this planet who cannot even afford $5 for a movie just forget the present $20 tag!! But these greedy studios and distributors will keep chasing on every single penny they can rip of your wallet.

Studios can charge whatever they want. You can decide if you want to buy their product, or not. A price higher than you're willing to pay doesn't justify theft. If you want a Ferrari and can't afford it, do you break into the dealership and steal one?

Having said that, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with offering online storage. But Mr. Dotcom's history certainly isn't helping him.

Fair or not, piracy is NOT theft.

I suppose that we can argue the exact definition of "theft" but it won't get us anywhere. We all know that downloading paid content without paying isn't going to fly as a business model.

Don't think so, because I've got a feeling that the vast majority of people who download pirated stuff for free wouldn't have paid for it if they couldn't get it for nothing. You can probably cut those "lost revenue" estimates by at least 90%. Record and music companies need a new business model if they want to attract those who habitually frequent the bit torrents of this world. I think for some of us Americans abroad, it might be a case of availability, not money, when it comes to downloading favorite TV programs and some movies that take forever to (or never) get to the Japanese market. Even hulu japan is totally useless for us.
