Most industrial processors do not need the latest FAB tech, as they are much simpler devices. You can do most of the day-to-day desktop computing you want to with 1990s era processors and a stripped back Linux release, if you remove the lock-ins implemented to sell newer kit. If you want internal resilience, you wouldn't be using a US OS like Windows or the MacOS anyway. Buy it's worth noting that mutual dependencies in trade prevent major wars. Removing them increases the chance of war.

But if you just want to speed things up, offering Intel lots more money will probably do it. Unless the USG has stepped in and told them to slow things down in Europe. A European dependency on the US is very useful for Washington.

...so despite all the bad news, what happened? Up 10% in the last 5 days of trading.

ever tried to put a linux install package together? That is the reason why linux can't become mainstream 'easily'. Sure plenty of big corporates who roll their own, and have specific role for their linux boxen are saving a lot of money. But this is not mainstream computing.

I was involved in creating man pages for a cross mac/linux files and printing solution in the early days, even then when there was all but half a dozen distros, it was a pain.

Crazy to think Uncle Sam is giving out billions to a company like Intel and they are firing thousands and cancelling planned factories.

Just say nein, Joe!

The name is the hint here. They've been in that market for decades, a leader in the field too. So they just have sufficient intelligence or at least a sensitive antenna for understanding that this overdimensioned hype is over soon and the time has come now to pull the parachute line for a softer landing, much softer than for the ones who don't have the intelligence and sensitivity and will be experiencing a sudden, hard and deadly freefall.
