If you really care about privacy I recommend these add-ons. It helps if you know a thing or two about computers though: Adblock Plus, Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus, Aries Cookie Block, Secure Sanitizer, AskForSanitize, BetterPrivacy (Super-Cookie (LSO) Safeguard), CookieCuller, For Human Eyes Only, Ghostery, HTTPS Everywhere, RequestPolicy (Control which cross-site requests are allowed), MAFIAAFire ThePirateBay Dancing! Automatically routes your website request via a random proxy for some (that you choose) sites.

There was a Wall Street Journal investigative series about online privacy (or lack thereof) a couple years ago. One of the recommended blockers is Ghostery, which You can download at ghostery.com to block trackers. It also shows you the trackers on any page you are viewing, which I noticed is often as high as 10 or more. This is for any mainstream page like CNN.com, not just sketchy ones. It also blocks most ads from cluttering the page.

Also research the topic of "reidentification" for a real eye-opener.

It's a bit of a vicious circle because a lot of that advertising revenue helps pay for some very useful free internet services and apps. No one really wants to be targeted by advertisers, but in effect, with diminished ads people are going to have to pay for some things which are now free or certain freebies might disappear altogether.

Our hearts bleed for those poor advertisers.
