The biggest difference is the chip - it's benchmarking quite well:

"iPhone 8 Is World's Fastest Phone (It's Not Even Close)"

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-8-benchmarks-fastest-phone,review-4676.html

Let's start with Geekbench 4, which measures overall performance. On the multicore portion of this test, the iPhone 8 hit 10,170. That's 54 percent faster than the score from Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 — currently the fastest Android phone.

The Android competition wasn't close. The Note 8 scored 6,564, and that's with an impressive 6GB of RAM paired with Qualcomm's fast Snapdragon 835 chip. How about the OnePlus 5 and its 8GB of RAM and Snapdragon 835? That handset got 6,542. With 4GB of RAM, the Galaxy S8 scored 6,295 with the same processor.

The iPhone 8 even edged out the score from the 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro with a 7th-generation Core i5 processor. That notebook notched 9,213. Is Geekbench 4 really comparable from phone to desktop? According to the founder of Geekbench, John Poole, “the short is answer is yes that the scores are comparable across platforms, so if an iPhone 8 scores higher than an i5, then the iPhone 8 is faster than the i5.”

Next up is 3DMark, which gauges graphics performance. The iPhone 8 scored an off-the-charts 62,212, and the iPhone 8 Plus managed an even higher 64,412. Compare that to the Note 8's 39,834 and the OnePlus 5's 39,576.

Qualcomm Snapdragon has a lot of work to do

Yawn.... Apple... another yawn, get a Sony Xperia!

Hell hath no fury like an anti-Appler in new iPhone season.

I dont think i've ever seen a new handset sold as a stand alone in Japan. So I'm wondering what carrier will these people be signing with and how they'll do it.

Buggy hardware and not a measurable upgrade from the iPhone 7. What a bunch of suckers, no wonder Apple has $$billions$$

It will be obsolete in about 3 months.

Don't spin what I said. You're a case in point that the elderly generations like to gripe and moan about youth. It wasn't you're generation that stated "youth is wasted on the young". Nothing's changed except the tools young people have that older people gripe about. Like I said, you're a case in point. I'm sure your parents said the same about you and said not to associate YOU with history. These kids will say the same about theirs (or at least about youth in general when they get older). Perhaps you ought to try and be more of an optimist and stop complaining about what you cannot change, and what never will change. Hell, it could be 30 years ago with you being your current age and you'd still complain about what young people were doing because you're not among them anymore.

Just stick to this news story. It's no deeper than that. It"s just a lighthearted news story about the ridiculousness of how Apple staff welcome, with crocodile smiles, young people about to spend Y80,000 on a mobile phone. Japan Today gets the hypocrisy of the photo. I get it. But you want to grind on making false accusations about the older generation blah, blah, blah. And what is it with you having to criticise and accuse every other poster on JT? When was the last time you agreed with another post?

kabuki death: " It is the new car."

To an extent, I agree. The funny thing about your comment is, these days cars aren't as necessary. :)

You're still complaining about the current youth, or at least what you perceive to be in the picture.

" The past is the past. Anything that happened say 30 years ago, even 72 years ago, should not influence or corrupt the thinking of people today."

Hahaha... Nope! Not complaining there at all.

"In other words dont associate this generation with history. I am glad that you agree on that point and have used it here..."

gogogo: "No brand or company defines me. People are way suckered I to buying crap they think they need"

Says the guy who jumps on every Apple-related thread to say he's "non-Apple".

No brand or company defines me. People are way suckered I to buying crap they think they need

Yet you famously (on JT at least) define yourself for not buying Apple and buying Android.

I fail to see the difference.

And let me add. I am still using iphone5 lol. It still works good for me. I like the iphonex. But surely would end up getting the six if my 5 breaks

Lots of iPhone 6 & 7 will now get dumped onto the 2nd-hand market.

Visit an electronic 2nd hand store which already are filled mostly with iPhones, fewer Android ones.

People overly excited for an over priced phone that has just added some features available on Android phones for years.

The problem with Android phones is that they use the Android operating system.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

My concern is that having owned earlier models of the iPhone/iPad that the apps which I may wish to download will be removed rendering these older iPad / iPhones essentially useless - at the time of their purchase, they were relatively expensive. So, going forward I guess in future we will see these new phones rendered obsolete - but after how many years ?

Homes and even cars are now out of reach for many consumers now especially the millennials and younger. They substitute the aspirational buys with shiny new gadgets, which is the space iPhone captures. It is the new car.

I spent 1500usd for each of my rc scale stuff. Because I enjoy it. I think same way with other hobby like fishing. You pay for boat, fishing tools and then catch a fish and then just return it to the water giving them a scar in the face. For an 1200usd iphone? Why not if you enjoy it? Anyway its not compulsory and if others buy it why criticize? Just my opinion though

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Wow! I've never been greeted like that when I've entered a store!

Yeah me neither! Wouldn't it be great if that was the standard greeting instead of the unenthusiastic irrashaimasse? Just imagine getting greeted like that everytime you entered a conbini or supermarket!

Every generation complains about the next one and says how theirs was better. That is the only true constant. You cannot say "things were more vibrant" -- they only were FOR YOU. And likewise every young generation looks up at their elders and scoffs at the criticism for what it is. And you can still do each and every thing you mentioned doing in your youth, my friend.

Read it again and you will find that my comments were experience, and not complaints. This time take a good, long look at the headline picture again. Apple employees waiting at the entrance giving Oscar-nominated happy smiley greetings to a young customer about to pay around Y80,000 for an iPhone. The photo very obviously captures the hypocrisy in one moment. My comments were directed at how my twenties were spent, in comparison to the headline picture.

Don't blame modern day phones for the fact that the past is the past, same as your parents likely didn't like things young people did when you were young, and their parents the same, and theirs the same, and so on.

I totally agree Smith. The past is the past. Anything that happened say 30 years ago, even 72 years ago, should not influence or corrupt the thinking of people today. In other words dont associate this generation with history. I am glad that you agree on that point and have used it here...

I'll get an X when the time is right. It is grossly overpriced, but I'm going to save for it first by cutting down on other stuff, and buy when my current contract is up. It is such a jump in so many ways that I think it's worth it, and I know I'll get a lot of use out of it. The double cameras and their functions, the video screen shots, faster processing speeds, thinner body, larger screen size (all glass front), better battery usage (less power consumption), and depending on the current model phone you have stereo speakers, and of course the wireless charging are huge.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Alex Einz: "some shiny overpriced and useless gadget..."

Useless... right. Tell us, do you have a smart phone? Yes or no. Hell, do you have a cell phone at all? if you're answer is yes, then you either admit they are far from useless if only for that function, or you admit you buy into useless products -- for use. Now, 'overpriced', on that we can agree.

bosphorus: "And it will cost even more if you need a wireless charger."

Where'd you hear that? Charger is included. And in fact, shops are going to start putting chargers in to attract customers, probably starting with Starbucks.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

112,800 yen for a smartphone, seriously?? And it will cost even more if you need a wireless charger. I really don't understand why every new model of iPhone is more expensive than the previous model. How much are we going to pay for a phone in several years, Y200,000? Hey, Apple, our wages are not growing. No, sorry, I will buy an Android phone.

@goldorak

...this pic could have been taken in any Apple Store around the world.

Never been to Preston on a murky Tuesday afternoon in November, I see....

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Wow! I've never been greeted like that when I've entered a store! Only companies like Apple do it, its like theyre all thinking, "Come on in! another sucker we can rip off with our over inflated prices and theyll take it happily do it since our PR juggernaut is so good at hyping our products better than what they're actually worth. have a nice day!"

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I now live in this generation but I had a great time in my late teens and in my twenties. There were no mobile phones but we had telephone boxes and phones at home. We would always have a local pub or local cafe where we knew we could find friends at a certain time of the week. When we went to live concerts we watched them instead of looking for the perfect mobile photo. The music scene and culture was much more vibrant and productive. And has anyone else noticed that the biggest and best live concerts these days are veteran artists of previous years and not current stars.

sad commercialism... people wait in line for days to be the first to get some shiny overpriced and useless gadget... imagine what we could achieve if we would volunteer same effort to things that actually matter.

Yep. And this is the 'Top Story' at the moment...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

do new model iphones sell out?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

This is exactly why I've always dreaded entering an Apple store. Exuberantly cool & happy staff aren't for me. Funny thing is this pic could have been taken in any Apple store around the world.

People overly excited for an over priced phone that has just added some features available on Android phones for years. This is the broken record for Apple. Oh yeah and there are a bunch of proprietary features.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Why? In a perfect world bookstores would be obsolete!

Depends on whether you want a world where young people are encouraged to spend Y80,000 on a shiny telephone with touchscreen buttons where you dont need to interact face-to-face anymore, and where you go to live concerts or restaurants to take rubbish photographs on your phone instead of experiencing the live act or striking up conversation in the restaurant. Or a world where you encourage young people to spend much less on educational, or historic, or thought-provoking literature. I guess you made your choice.

In the words of the infamous Johnny Tran - "Too soon junior..."

He looks happy now, but he will be a bit sad in a month or 2 when every cool kid has the iPhoneX. Because lets face it, it looks 10x better.

Its good that improvements in phone tech has slowed so much though. Nowadays a 3 year old phone (iphone or android) will work perfectly fine for most situations, including photography. And they are super cheap now!

In a perfect world, staff members at bookstores will welcome young people and children in the same manner.

Alex Einz - sad commercialism... people wait in line for days to be the first to get some shiny overpriced and useless gadget...

While they may very well be overpriced, I'd hardly call them useless. I killed my iPhone 6s last weekend through carelessness. I couldn't survive the week without a phone so I had to get another before the new one came out. :-(

I’d probably be excited too but the reaction in the picture seemed just hilarious to me. Well, to each his own.
