Yahoo Japan Corp., which has since merged with the Japanese social media platform Line

The Yahoo brand is moribund internationally and it's Japanese franchise is it's only profit making branch.

-Japanese two tier justice system swoops in to help them.

Those who don't believe the LDP, bureaucracy and Japan Inc. combine work in synergy are very naive.

Very true.

Google is a search engine, it indexes other sites, it's not creating the content. How stupid are people getting?

This is a bit rediculous when there's so many monopolies here. Do I have a choice of which Shinkansen to use for instance?

Google is an American company therefore it being a monopoly = bad

The Shinkansen is run by a Japanese company therefore it being a monopoly = ok

My coworkers all use Yahoo! and Bing. It drives me insane.

I wonder why did Japanese tech companies stopped their feet, they were the lead in the 80s- but they became old dinosaurs instead. Where's the Japanese rival for Google, Amazon, Apple, ...? How easy would have been for Sony to create their own "sPhone" back in 2005-ish and eat the Japanese market.

@dagon Yahoo Japan is not a franchise. It was a joint venture set up in 1996 between SoftBank Group Corp. and the former US-based Yahoo! Inc. Currently it is owned by LY Corporation( LYC), a Japanese internet company owned by A Holdings a joint venture between SoftBank Group of Japan, and Naver Corporation of South Korea.

My coworkers all use Yahoo! and Bing. It drives me insane.

@David Brent How does that affect you?

Japanese should invent their own search engine,they should make Google and Apple stop selling app, Yahoo is own by ATT

There is NO comparison between the four platforms even with MSN Edge included.

Google is the Ultimate if not the only search engine people use when it comes to Quick, little ads, multiple options and resources search with NO Nonsense search.

The others blind your eyes with ads pupping in your face Left right and center.

One of the reasons JT is popular with many subscribers is the fact that it does NOT shove ads in your face, other online news sources are filled with ads that many readers find Offending.

There are loads of restrictions on search engines now, mostly state led. They still have vast numbers of results for your searches, but you may only see a few pages of them, badly skewed by their algorithms.

quote: I wonder why did Japanese tech companies stopped their feet.

Japan Inc.'s post WWII economic miracle was all about progressive improvement, making hardware slightly smaller, slightly faster and slightly better each year. And nobody did that better than Japan. But the traditional way of doing things hampered taking big steps with innovative new products that might have failed. In the US, and in VC generally, failure is an accepted and expected part of the deal for new tech. It's more problematic in Japan.

Also because Japanese companies are happy to dominate the bubble, when some of their tech - 1Seg, Suica - could and should have gone global. And because the internet is language based, and for the first decades, it was English with other options. Most of the web was ignored by most of the Japanese public. It was also PC-based, whilst Japan used phones. So many Japanese websites were Japanese only and hugged the left hand border of a PC web browser.

Things have improved since then. There is good stuff trying to happen now, but the net universe is no longer expanding. New tech is now seen as a threat to state control of the narrative, national security, border security and the safety of women, children and small furry creatures. So the carnival is over. The smart money is in military hardware now instead of trade or tech.

@gogogo

Who are you talking about ?

Google is not a mere search engine.

Google LLC (/ˈɡuːɡəl/ ⓘ, GOO-ghəl) is an American multinational corporation and technology company focusing on online advertising, search engine technology, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, consumer electronics, and artificial intelligence (AI).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google

Google search is a search engine powered by google search engine. So, if I understand clearly, was also powering Yahoo but in a way which negatively impacted Yahoo adverstisment income. And/or Yahoo was using Google online advertisment technology but same issue, the way the use was made possible by Yahoo was affecting it.

@WoodyLee

I think you are messing up several thing

@David Brent

Bing autotranslate page is pretty convenient. But the program seems to have issue closing properly.

Personaly, I recommend Duck and Go : better result, less spying. Everyone do according to their taste and confort so if it work for you...

Anything anti monopoly in this country is a joke. The whole country is setup that way. Let Google give them a nice middle finger. Yahoo being part of political group explains why they are so old. I see people using yahoo even for mapping. Wonder where they are getting all the photos from. From outside Japanese friends I don’t know many people using them.

Who uses search engines now in the day of AI?

Total waste of time to search though pages of links to find what you are looking for.

Just use like Microsoft's Copilot or OpenAI and you get you answer right away.

Seach engines are morbid now.

@flute: the article is only talking about Google the search engine. Google the search engine has no original content, it is indexed from other sites.
