that Japan, even with an independent spy satellite capability, will only be able to provide logistics (transportation, fuel, women) to US troops while the Americans do all the fighting.

America don't need to fight at all. The exhibition of arms is enough not to think of fight against America. Who will dare to that, China? For what, occupying Japan, that has no natural resources? No country will try to that, the NK is sometimes roaring just to threaten the armless Japan and take some forced aid from her.

Well, Japan has a problem. They have technology coming out of their ears, but can't sell it in Akihabara. How many people would buy a digital camera that can take a picture of a tennis ball on Mt. Everest, from a tall building in Tokyo when it costs several billions of Yen. The only customer would be the Japanese Govt.

So now Japan will have a better idea on how many conventional and nuclear missiles are aimed at it from China and North Korea, or at least a better indication of where the launch areas are, especially the ones hidden in mountain ranges.

But how will this be helpful? Japan is banned from offensive operations, so knowing about how your potential enemy can hit you with the explicit knowledge that you can't hit back means that Japan, even with an independent spy satellite capability, will only be able to provide logistics (transportation, fuel, women) to US troops while the Americans do all the fighting.

LoveUSA: T.O.P. will win!!! We all know that American spies are the best.

PS My dream is to meet a real spy and to talk with him/her about the spy job.

I agree with LoveUSA, Iris is really good. I wonder who has the best spies.

I love Iris because there are no good guys there. Everybody is very bad, treachorous and everybody changes sides quickly without a second thought, one day you are a South Korean spy, the other day you are a North Korean spy or something else. The Japanese spies are very good too but they did not show their technology yet. i wonder who will win, most probaly nobody. The North Korean spy woman is really great, I am her fan. If all North Korean spies are so sharp minded, scheming and well trained as those in Iris, it will be difficult for Japan's intelligence, so this spy satellite is a good idea :)

Is Google maps not enough? I managed to find the odd car riding around in Pyongyang. Anyway, it must be getting crowded above NK. Hope they don't run into that brick NK claimed to have put into orbit.

"Last year, Japan’s parliament voted to allow the nation’s space programs to be used for defense for the first time as part of Tokyo’s push to give its military a greater international role."

This is news to me. This was a major point of the foundation of JAXA and its predecessors. I wonder what the new guidelines are. I am guessing that they cannot entail any kind of attack mode, surveillance only, etc.

apecNetworks " an integrated system coordinating satellite capabilities w/ defense vehicles."

This has already been done. It is called SKYNET and it is looking for Sarah Conner.

Okay, good. Now, there is a need to link the satellite feed to new, sophisticated unmanned drones w/ state of the art optics/sensors to get even finer resolution pixs of high priority sites. Might as well go for it, since Japan is piecing together an air security system - an integrated system coordinating satellite capabilities w/ defense vehicles. Refinement can come at a much later date. I was born to think about things like this.

Japan has launched spy satellites primarily to watch developments in North Korea.

I watch the spy drama Iris and I was amazed how advanced North Korea is spy technology. It can give South Korea and Japan a run for their money.

The country also plans to have a two-legged robot walk on the moon by around 2020.

That'll be quite an accomplishment to have a robot walk on the moon. Maybe it can build the moon base for us...

On another note... What other country would put up with an aggressor firing a missile through their airspace? Would Russia? Iran? America? Israel?

I'm surprise Japan isn't re-arming. How is it a good idea to antagonize the US over military base location?
