i hope the ldp did due diligence and consulted other tech companies instead of relying on their ministers. remember the cyberdefence guy who never really used a computer and didn't know whether it was okay to use thumbdrives? ....yeah.

Agreed. However, you can bet Japan Inc is just scrutinizing the competition, analyzing how they can do the same thing. "Hey, you shouldn't do that (until we've caught up with you and start doing exactly what you're doing now)."

I think that Rakuten (a Japanese company) and Yahoo Japan (a Japanese company) will also fall within this discussion? Let’s not play the mind games of Japan Companies or Industry trying to figure out Global or put pressure on them to get an advantage, shall we?

Right. I hope the government give their (Japanese) companies equal (third degree) treatment. Contract terms should also be looked at for business to customer contracts. Why is it that low cost phone companies after a couple of years in effect try to unload their customers by increasing prices by as much as 50%? Who in effect is protecting the end consumer?

I have to agree with all of the above. This is more of the LDP protecting Japan inc. Typical Japanese protectionism as usual.

I agree that many of these sites have too much market power, but Rakuten, Yahoo Japan, Softbank, although Japanese, are not the same as Toyota, Toshiba, etc. in terms of influence baked into the system. Including them in the government statement gives the appearance of fairness. Rakuten was also included in the recent government raid on travel booking sites. The company being protected in that raid is JTB -- and the hotel industry. JTB's booking terms are all in favor of the hotels. Can the LDP deliver real economic innovation and reform without antagonizing their base? Or will giving establishment companies time to compete work out best for Japan?

Toyota is far from being a near monopoly in Japan or anywhere else the way some of the IT companies area.

If that is the case how do you explain the fact Zuckerberg has come out in favour of regulation in the US and the LDP proposals are not so different from the EU (European Union) is looking to do.

I previously worked for a company that sold products at a loss. The sales target was medical and scientific specialists. I was required to trick them into proving detailed private information. I quit when I realized the real purpose of the company was selling this private information.

While I am NOT sympathetic to big IT companies, hate most for what they are ACTUALLY doing while the masses GIVE AWAY their valuable data, as we can see it IS coming back to bit us all on the A$$!!

That said what Japan REALLY needs is a REAL consumer protection agency that DOES their job! Japan Inc has been fleecing Japanese & us gaijin since the 60s BIG TIME!!

As an astute poster mention JTB is a REAL problem in Japan, toss in phone companies etc, there are MANY industries that RIP off all of us, the biggest is likely hands down the LDP!

But as others have pointed out, this is going after foreign companies primarily, have seen this time & time again, but it ISNT helping Japan, it just makes it worse as too many companies here don't adapt or improve much over time, tons of deadwood companies, hell 70% haven't been paying any taxes for over 3decades!!

Nothing especially Japanese about that. Search on "how silicon valley companies avoid paying taxes" to see how it is done in the US. Why do you think Donald Trump is "reluctant" to have his tax returns may public? US companies and their tax dodging have been a major issue in Britain and continental European countries.

They are both Japanese companies thank you very much. Yahoo Japan is owned 48.17 percent by SoftBank and uses the name Yahoo under licence.
