Greyscale, color, flatscreen, HD, 3d, concave and SuperHD.

Neat development for a 50 year old!

4K resolution isn't going to benefit most people. You need a very large screen and/or sit very close.

More than 4K broadcasts, I think 4K panels will be good for high quality glasses-free 3D.

3800 horizontal lines gives roughly four thousand, which is why it's called 4K apparently.

Just in time for the world cup?

And when the Koreans catch up, what next? Japan invents 4M?

"8K test broadcasting” in 2016, she added."

I think it's too ambitious to have 2016 as target for 8K. As Arion mentioned, even 4K wouldn't benefit anyone but very larget TV owners. 8K will only benefit 100V or larger screens.

As for the older population here, so many still use clam shell phones saying it's good enough. So how many will give up their good enough standard flat screen TVs for a 4k model? Younger folks may be limited on shelling out the cash. I guess it will take a long time to bring down prices. Beautiful, sharp displays with very few good shows to watch is a major hurdle to overcome. Will movies, etc. come into 4k TVs in super HD or just certain programs?

It should be noted that the Advanced Standards Television Committee (ATSC)--the group that developed the 720p and 1080i HDTV standards in the USA back in the late 1990's--is about to release the ATSC 3.0 standard, which will cover Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 resolution) broadcasting. In short, Ultra HD broadcasts could be coming to the USA as early as the fall of 2015. It'll be interesting to see when will Japan roll out Ultra HD broadcasts based on an extension of the ISDB-T standard now used in Japanese HDTV broadcasts; this article only mentions test broadcasts, not full-scale commercial broadcasting.

I'd love to have '65 or so in my living room. Aside from the currently high price, the lack of quality content at this time will hold me off from getting one.

Just like digital television came to America a few years ahead of Japan. Too bad most people above the age of 16 don't have good enough vision to easily tell the difference between HD and UHD.

Agreed. I find most programming nowadays to be inane nonsense. Who needs to see AKB, SMAP or the Kardashians in UHD? these are bad enough in the current format. It's a good thing there are still many books to read.

Who gives a damn apart from the manufacturers and retailers?

Do we not have enough landfill and e-waste on the planet? Enough, already!

I agree sensenotsocommon. What are the benefits for an old man like me to get uhd over my current HD tv? It's a waste of time and money.

This is akin to the mega pixel wars for digital cameras. After a while people don't care anymore if their needs are being met. A few might want 64k TV, but I think for most normal sized homes anything more than 8k will show no gain in real life situations. For the next 5 years I'm fine with 1080p

Also as one ages their vision gets worse... So what's the point.. Lol
