Good to know my 5G phone won't be obsolete for 10 more years. Bad news for its manufacturer?

Japan can't launch 6G because there are no Japanese telecom equipment vendors left. Japan's 5G is being built with equipment from foreign vendors.

And the wireless communication standard is set by a consortium of foreign telecom equipment vendors(Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung), not by Japan.

Of course, Japan "can" launch a 6G standard that is being used only in Japan, just like i-Mode and PHS, but is this what Japanese government want?

Japanese government needs to acknowledge that Japan's prime days are behind it, and it can no longer compete against the US, China, and Korea in advanced technology and standard setting, and can better allocate its precious resources on projects that yield higher returns like more tourism and finance, not on stuff like 6G and civilian aerospace(Mitsubishi MRJ) that are endless money pitts.

yield higher returns like more tourism and finance,

I tend to disagree as tourism only brings higher returns to the few vs spread out across the board. IT brings more social problems that end up breaking local governments and wasting precious resources for the local population. No thank you. I'd rather have higher yielding jobs as result of continued research and production any day that will attract the younger adults to support their families and possibly add children to a shrining populace.

Fantastic... but... can we have the 4G already??

6G. Wow.

Fantastic... but... can we have the 4G already??

All too true. When I am out and about, I struggle to maintain a 4G connection and often only get 3G. k

I also can't wait to see the price for it... even just the 5G...

The current fake 4G (often it's 3G) is over priced compare to other countries.

Will it be a real UNLIMITED DATA? Without a FUP?

Future will tell....

Sounds like smoke and mirrors to seem like they are doing something. Pretty soon they will be announcing plans for some kind of space mission.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments, IMHO allocating resource isn't the problem, it's lack of discipline that's at stake. Fat cat bankers who are only interested in fees NOT returns is the primary reason for lack of innovation in Japan today. Massive holdings of cash generating -ve returns...what a waste of opportunity.

USA will continue to dominate because amongst its fat cats are very talented financiers who cares about IRR, RoC etc. These people seed innovative investments everyday.

Likewise, the Chinese has basically copied USA's model, but it does it via the state, with massive amounts allocated to innovation and jobs creation. Even though it might not have financial talents like USA, it's got party discipline. Fat cats can only remain fat if they produce result. Else it's off to the gulags.

In response you state a case for financial sector what I call white collar criminals i.e. fat cat bankers and investors on what no longer drives economy as it did in the past but robs countries and the people of research/production. That is what drives real hardline economies, the creation and manufacturing of new innovative products. The 1% make all the profits today that even investors themselves are losing their own shirts. It is a grand farce. By Japan involving comprehensive strategy by this summer on future 6G wireless communication networks is planning ahead to stay among the leaders. It will create jobs and from that future thinkers that leads to higher wage jobs and returns. IT sounds more like your looking at this from just an investors perspective that as mentioned is just a farce today and moving forward, as mentioned R&D is what makes countries strong, not finance, it ruins countries. True the two should go hand in hand, but realistically one gets greedier than the other and only leads to loss of job markets, future gains, i.e. your investors, and ends up in recessions and homelessness among many other issues and what is left is the low end jobs that pays nothing and in todays earnings means having more than 1 job or no growth or wealth but for the few 1%.

How is this possible when protocols for 6G haven't been determined? And by the way, by 2030 50% of the country will be over 70 years old, there are more pressing issues that need attention.

While Japan develops this new technology, they also need to beef up their physical & cyber security since a certain communist neighbor will undoubtedly steal it from them (like what they are doing now with US), make cheaper version and manipulate/bribe foreign governments into giving up their taxpayers' money to implement it in their countries.

This is so hilarious. Japan can't even do 5G yet they are talking about 6G. When Toyota fails in not-so-distant future, they will talk about developing a fleet of spaceship lol

Japan is one of the leaders in technology, whether you like it or not. It's the truth. No, making smartphones only, doesn't equate to having more tech expertise. The iPhone's cameras are Sony. Some of the highest and products are Jalanese.

6G is already being researched by LG. What stops Japan from doing the same? The belief that "Japan is behind, so it has to keep being behind"?

Can't do 5G? Toyota failing?

What? Is it that bad for you that Japan is planning ahead and is trying to stay ahead of the curve?

As possible as South Korean companies like LG already researching 6G.

But oh I forgot. This is Japan. It's always behind everyone in everything.

My Japanese network (DoCoMo) is far superior to the American (T-Mobile) and UK (O2) networks I am also on... All of them do the job but the Japanese network is better in my experience.

I refrained from including South Korea in my earlier post because South Korea just doesn't have financial talent.

What South Korea have are risk taking chaebols (family conglomerates) who only ever fund their own conglomerates or filial tied conglomerates, and they manipulate politics to minimise their own risks. But how long can this go on in a democracy?

Not at all. I acknowledge the cesspit that is wall street. But I also acknowledge that the spirit of J P Morgan lives on today (even though not in the current JPM company).

Here are but a few examples of success that USA funded in recent times: Google, Paypal, Facebook, Amazon, Tesla, cloud computing, etc, Did anyone think Qualcomm would overtake Intel?

How about getting 4G to work properly first ?
