Wow! And from a university that is sinking in the all important international rankings (lol). Has anybody checked his thesis?

On a more serious note, this is a great development. It means that my mates teaching at Hongo TAFE won't have to take any stick from the other old imperial universities or IARU institutions about not having a laureate on faculty.

The way Japan is going in this years Nobels, I'm half expecting to wake up to the news that Shinzo Abe has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize!

Congrats to these two men on their breakthrough discovery and award.

I hope he gets the prize money and not the company he worked for

Japan is cleaning up in the annual Nobel sweepstakes. Japanese citizens have already been awarded more Nobels in the 21st century than in all of the 20th. We are witnessing the fruits of Japan's post-World War II economic boom, since Nobels are typically awarded for research done decades ago. PM Koizumi back in 2002 said Japan should aim for 30 Nobel Prizes in 50 years--probably no question Japan will have reached that number by 2050 for the 2001-2050 period.

Japan is cleaning up in the annual Nobel sweepstakes. doing well yes far from cleaning up. Japan has 24 Nobel prices, while UK USA lead with over 450, 5 other countries Switzerland, France Germany, Sweden, Russia, with smaller populations and GDP that have won more. Also notice that many of the Japanese winners have had to go overseas to get the resources they need for the research to become leaders in there fields. Japan needs to spend much more on science/medical research and teach students the importance of creative individualist thinking. When they do this they will breed exponentially more world leaders in science. Japan has plenty of talented minds, just doesnt develop many of those minds to there true potential.

Congratulations to these brilliant minds, and thanks to all of their work, which could help us understand the universe better.

I'm curious to know why in the Japanese media no mention of there being a second non-Japanese Nobel laureate is mentioned. Can anyone explain that? The same thing happened with Yamanaka - every Japanese person I spoke with seemed to think he alone won the award.

The Japanese media did mention both winners.

The Japanese media did mention both winners.

As usual however the "other" winners were an after thought, just like on NPR this AM the "other" winner was the Japanese man and they actually called the Japanese winner "the other winner" on the show as well.

Right, okay semantics police - I was inferring that their was little mention of the other winner with many articles (not all) failing to mention it was not a solo effort. When I look at English language media both winners are given equal cover.

Moderator: Your inference is incorrect. That ends discussion on this point.
