Free instant message application LINE announced Tuesday that they have now more than 300 million users.

They'd just passed 100 million users last January and then 200 million users last July. After LINE launched the service in June 2011, it gained in popularity in Japan and started exploding in popularity outside of Japan (mainly Asia, Europe, Russia, and South America)

According to LINE CEO Ryo Morikawa, LINE is aiming to grow in popularity in large countries such as India, Brazil and the U.S. and reach 500 million users within 2014.

LINE began in 2011, founded by engineers at NHN Japan, the Japanese arm of Naver Corporation (formerly NHN) based in South Korea. Today, it is operated by LINE Corporation, a spinoff company, headquartered in Japan.

Line is too girly! I prefer "Whatsapp"

I use it. Love it! Group messaging, attaching photos and videos is so much easier. The stickers are nice too. I thought who needs LiNE? But after getting it I haven't used iMessage once.

Line is great. My only problem with it is that you cannot attach a photo within a message and have to do so before or after, but on the whole it's a great app. And yeah, I agree with Rob, the stickers are fun.

My family told me that there is also a TV commercial in Brazil... awesome!

Can do it in Facebook, too -- point being there are way too many SNS and chat apps, so I think I'll just stick to what I have now. But thank you. I've heard of Note.

Smith: I had a feeling I would not be clear enough. On LINE there is a note symbol in the top left corner of トーク. Click on that in トーク and it allows you to send photos with a message to the person you are messaging. It is really good.
