this never would have happened if Gates was still in charge.

Well I had problems so I reinstalled win8. I will be more carefull next time. The aesthetic and nice features worked well but the sytem was slow and couldn't display english UI on japanese windows. Kind of a major screw up I think. Title Should be A year in the making and a day in the breaking

Tried Ubuntu Touch. Not bad at all. Since a tablet for me is really for PDF textbook viewing, browsing and some apps I'm good. I can see things improving.

Microsoft updates usually cause issues and problems ask anyone running a decent website or a number of software programs.

If you really want/need to use Windows, then do what most big cooperations do. Always stay behind a few revisions of Windows. My company's PC/laptop are still running on XP. Road map is W7 next, not W8 anytime soon. After all, if our PC/laptop are down, we lose time and money.

Windows 8 has been an utter disaster for Microsoft, as too has their foray into hardware with Tablet designs , indeed it may be their end.....

What Microsoft failed to understand is that Apple has also a practical Desktop environment upon which developers can develop for their iOS based tablet products - one that isn't a restrictive tablet focused environment itself. Windows 8 however, tries to force everything into this tablet compressed environment... copy-cat gone wrong.

Innovation vs Practicality seemingly gone with the wind here. The 'rot' started with their Office 2007 upgrade, and has spread to their consumer OS platform, if Microsoft wants to move forward, they will need to focus their attention upon their Entertainments platform and to a lesser extent the Business Services solutions platform .

I thought WE were slow to update. This past Summer, the school division I work at switched from WinXP SP3 to Win 7 SP1. The reason we did so was because in April Microsoft will stop providing security updates for WinXP. The software will still work but any security holes discovered from then-on will not get patched. I'm not criticizing Microsoft's decision because WinXP is ANCIENT in computer terms. When the support stops, WinXP will be 12 years old.

The big difference between Microsoft and Apple is that Microsoft runs on committees.

It shows in their hardware and software. Their OSes, Office, Word, Excel, etc., are overbloated with features that probably never get used. Apple runs differently. It's not an unruly mob chasing the ball, it's people holding their positions and passing the ball to one another.

MS System upgrades are a tale of woe.

XP was terrible at first, but, with service packs became useable. And ended up being a reliable and stable OS. Then, bored with going forward, MS went sideways in Vista. This debacle alone increased Apple sales and Linux installs remarkably. They got back on track with Windows 7 and this became a successor for XP. Then they went into lululand with 8. Off on another, completely different direction. People failed to buy in droves and now they are moving tentatively back on track, except that there are some rather large glitches.

You would think, wouldn't you, that before putting out an OS, they would test it?

Not MS. It doesn't need to. Its public are its beta testers.

Microsoft, like Apple before the second coming of Jobs, has lost its direction.

Apple, on the other hand, even without Jobs, is keeping straight on course.

Our US government clients have generally moved to Win7 and the employees seem to be fine with it. But our customers are mostly engineering-type agencies and I suspect those employees all have Win7 computers at home.
