Windows 8.1 will allow people to start in the desktop mode automatically. In that mode, it is restoring a button that resembles the old Start button. Although the Start button will now take people back to the new tablet-style start screen, rather than the old Start menu,

~ Well this kills me getting 8.1 already... I DON'T WANT YOUR TOUCH TABLET GUI !!! MS have you not learned ANYTHING from the consumers that rejected 8.0 ?!?!?

"Although the Start button will now take people back to the new tablet-style start screen, rather than the old Start menu, rather than the old Start menu"

1 step forward and 2 steps back and their NEW start button will not address the problem.

The lack of the old start menu when you click the START button.

"while Microsoft has encouraged people to use the new tablet-style layout"

Encourage !!!

More like forced people to use the new tablet-style layout

If i wanted a mobile phone look, i would buy a mobile phone.

i upgraded my computer only 18 months ago,and installed W8 on a 2nd drive in December 2012, just to look at it and make up my own mind about it.

Also because W8 was cheap then.

My monitor is about 4 years old. Screen size 1920 x 1080 21" (533mm) and it still works fine, so why should i buy a new monitor just to have touch ?

Thankfully there are people out there that know what PC users want and have fixed the problem of W8 no start button with programs like "Classic Shell" which i use.

W8 does have a few good points, but the lack of the proper START button and its sub menus is a draw back for me.

Currently i have a spare copy of Windows 7 for my next new computer. I do not see W8 being changed enough for me to use it full time.
