Here's a radical idea. How about making Windows 7 work properly first. It is constantly stalling and thinking on a machine that should run very well on this OS. Mac is far superior in stability and usability.... still.

Perhaps your hardware is bad, outdated or HDD needs defraging?

My PC runs perfectly well with Win 7 Ultimate.

Lastly, Linux ( Ubuntu 11.10 ) > Mac Windows 7 Ult > Mac Ubuntu > Windows 7 Ult Mac is crap :)

This will occur in Windows 8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzFUcDKC64E

And executives said it powers up on PCs in eight seconds, much faster than the previous version.

With what specs?

a design Microsoft calls “Metro”

Groan. Sorry, this remains me too much of "Metrosexual". Yeah, I'm a dinosaur.

They should switch to the mac system.

"Perhaps your hardware is bad, outdated or HDD needs defraging?"

New machine, new drive, all operating perfectly. OS is just slow and not so good. Same in the office.

Windows 7 is working perfectly well for me too. It is so much faster than Vista. I think Windows 8 will be good for tablets but I don't really see any use for it on a desk top. I think I will pass.

The test "beta" version of the revamped system was introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the planet's largest cell phone trade show

Call me old fashioned, but I like using cell phones as a phone. As the lines between cell phone and pc become more and more blurred, I wish they would just drop the word "phone" on these mobile systems.

Might have to check your Task manager then and CPU usage %. As well as start up programs.

Last year, I assembled a desktop for my wife, costing me about 1,000 USD (almost 80,000 yen) including Windows 7 professional 64-bit, but I had a spare 19" monitor. So far, we're both happy with the performance - I have 2 other desktops at home and a laptop, all XP.

With Windows 8, the fast boot time sounds tempting, but on the other hand, having to get a touch screen (undoubtedly quite pricey) makes me want to stick with Windows 7 for the time being. Also, as a gamer, I have to balance between performance, budget and longevity of my equipment - I have been using my Windows XP desktop for 5 years now, and it's still very much reliable for my daily use.

With what specs?

With an SSD.

Oftentimes that meas someone went off the reservation in their internet habits. Don't visit questionable sites; don't install pretty toolbars or useless "utilities".

That's true for Windows, Linux, MOSX, etc.

Run the OS's firewall, run a decent antivirus (with tamper and phising protection), use strong passwords. That's it. Keep it clean.

Let's see if Microsoft has learned from Vista, or this is a case of Star Trek odd-even movies, hahaha.

A few notes:

There is still the option to go back to classic Windows desktop, instead of using Metro.

Currently, while Apple uses iOS on both iPhone and iPad but keeping Mac OSX separate, Microsoft wants to use Win8 on both PCs and tablets but keeping MS phones separate. Microsoft wants this so people could run the same programs on the PCs and the tablets, particularly as Intel starts making tablet CPUs (though it'll also work with ARM and AMD chips - ever notice Macs don't work on AMD chips?).

IIRC, Microsoft's SkyDrive gives 25GB free storage, while free iCloud gives 5GB. This is because, unlike iCloud, SkyDrive allows video storage (ergo, bigger files). OTOH, SkyDrive is not as good on the music options as iCloud.

Instead of using the old text passwords, Win8 has the option of Picture Login - a new take on security that lets user log in by touching and swiping a photo on a touch screen (kinda like some Android phones but without connect-the-dots), makes it harder to guess password by brute computer force.

A new pair of goodies in Win8 will be the ability to "Refresh" or "Reset" the system. With the first, you keep all your apps but clean out all the operating system gunk files, and with the second, you get a completely new Windows installation - perfect for gifting an older machine.

Lastly, here's a good quick read:

Looks like WIndows8 is targeting phones and touch screen Pcs. Don't need that. Sticking with my Windows7 & XP machines.

What exactly is the diffence between SkyDrive and Megaupload?

One of the main goals of Microsoft when OS Vista was released was to place customers in a positions to abandon old hardware. Ironically OS Vista was a complete failure as an OS put still required better hardware to operate on. The reason for this was because Microsoft was tired of having to accommodate those with outdated hardware since Windows 95 or 98. Given that Windows has by far the largest market share of OS, this means that windows was holding everyone else back and had to take a major risk. When Windows 7 came along it was a massive step in the right direction and everything that Vista could have been.

What exactly is the diffence between SkyDrive and Megaupload?

SkyDrive is cloud based storage for personal documents and sharing thereof. MegaUpload was a "service" which lured users with cheap access to copyrighted material (which they had no rights to) and would provide free "service" to those who uploaded the most sought after pirated files. They made money off of uploaded pirated files. Akin to you taking all your movie DVD collection, ripping them and then setting up a webservice and selling streamed movies from those DVDs --all without anyone's consent.

Yeah, I can see no difference, in some alternate universe of your own imagination.
