Mixi plans to double users within 4 years

Mixi Inc said it plans to boost the number of its users to 30 million from 17 million within four years. Mixi expects to attract more users by adding more functions and content to its site, opening up registration and through a marketing campaign.

Launched in February 2004, it logs over 15 billion monthly views, a quarter of which are via mobile phones, but the number of its users is still a fraction of those of News Corp's MySpace or of Facebook.

but nothing as mixi are not targeting outside japan.

This is a japanese product only.

likewise in recent news stories facebook admit they are struggling in asia due to earlier market leaders in korea, china and japan each with their own popular systems and different approaches.

Many Japanese I know struggle with facebook(i dont really know why) but find mixi intuitive and more comfortable - maybe its having your own profile with pics that they are not comfortable with - I'm not sure.

For a news source with more beef on the last point in this article which you could in this JT (re?)produced article is presented as "irrelevant" or misleading if talking only about Japan or Japanese users; check out here for starters: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8256997.stm

I also find the Mixi interface to be more intuitive, oftentimes with Facebook I have no idea where things are or why it behaves the way it does. Whether Mixi really expects to capture a quarter of the nation's population, I don't know, but there is always room for a home-grown option, I think, although many of the "new" features (Mixi Voice, the Sunshine Farm game, etc.) are direct take-offs of Facebook, Twitter, and others. They're doing what they gotta do, just like everyone else I guess.

The fact that you cant use mixi on an iphone really sums up their attitude and why they will eventually fall behind all the others

And the fact that you need an invitation from someone in order to join. It's very representative of the closed nature of Japan.

The "in" group vs. the "out" group, it is also indicative in the language.

With all these social networking sites that people seem to be spending so much time on it is no wonder the world is in a global recession! I am constantly amazed that my so-called full-time working friends seem to have time to send me a red wine, measure their movie compatibility and establish what kind of 80`s song they are.

The whole worlds gone mad!
