Musk and his own AI startup, xAI, and a consortium of investment firms want to acquire OpenAI so they can revert it back to its original charitable mission as a nonprofit research lab.

Being non-profit without being open-source (open training data + source code + model parameters) doesn't make any sense. Changing it's status to "non-profit" while still "closed source" is just an alias for an unprofitable company with a convenient tax strategy.
