The letter warns that AI systems with “human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity” — from flooding the internet with disinformation and automating away jobs to more catastrophic future risks out of the realms of science fiction.

The creation of "Human-competitive intelligence" is indeed a milestone in the history of humanity.

But additional training has been shown to lessen the hallucination problem in LLM, so a pause could be the wrong step.

And it is unlikely that other corporate or national actors, like China playing catch up , would pause too.

The genie is out of the bottle, get ready, it is looking more and more like a hard take-off scenario.

I was already worried about it, but this scares me even more knowing many scientists want to halt it.

Pardon? Outsmart humans, those miscalculated outputs of bits and bytes? Nothing will happen here. And if they nowvhalt development and apply their favorite constraints and weights based on correctness , wokeness and add gender or racial biases and all such, then one cannot even call it an AI anymore. Then it’s a simple human based political tool, like propaganda, television, mainstream media and so on, a little bit camouflaged with technological and IT terms. You can then also like before read normal books, read in Wikipedia, make your conventional internet searches or calculate your tasks and statistics yourself. The real way to do it would be to run those AI systems as they are and then only to use those results who fit into wanted parameter frames, case by case. Anything below that level , especially massive human interference, contradicts to the term AI of course.

It seems human have enough artificial ignorance

AI will not slow down, if anything the learning pace will accelerate. What is more of concern is what will some humans choose to do with this technology. Laws governing its uses will be too slow and too late and certainly no consensus. The best bet would be to watch the development progress and learn to adapt or risk becoming obsolete. There will be no egalitarian future unless we make it.

As a believer in critical thinking,it raise your level of logic,by embracing the laws of probability,so you can function as a logical thinking human being

I'm not sure anyone that signed that petition has ever been pro regulation, and I just don't see AI being used in sinister ways more so than it currently could be.

Thinking one could arrive at a consensus on how to regulate AI seems like a dream.

People that are not willing to think for themselves, will be at the mercy of artificial thoughts

Why do so many blindly follow those hypes and overdo? It’s only a stupid tool, not intelligent at all, and mostly it’s capable only of some mass calculations, like regressions and multiplication of matrices, and the main feature, it has a power switch or chord, or as many have might already experienced, it’s not even available or accessible all the time. Alone that shows already that it is of no use and of no danger too. In the future for example autonomous driving by AI that is out of power or not accessible? Nice try at higher speeds on a highway… So please calm down a bit, you can use it or not and you can use its still erroneous results unverified or use them just not.

How about a six month halt from Humans killing Humans? And Musk had his engineers program their vehicles to roll through Stop signs when it was determined to be "safe". It's against the law, period. Now the genie is long out of the bottle and control is the real illusion. God help us all...
