That is why you should be careful about what apps you download and careful manage your permission settings. Photots, locations, call history, search history, and so much more are saved on the servers of these companies. This information is then sold off. These types of things are typically buried into the user agreements. Its part of the reason they make user agreements so convoluted is because they hope you get tired of reading and fail to take notice of certain things placed in the middle.

The app may not be getting access to all your pictures but the article ignores the apps terms of service which grants the company the rights to the photos you do give it access to.
