For all the “US is a spent power” folks from yesterday:

See this?

Russians aren’t going to do this. Russians can’t even contemplate doing this.

There are no rocks on Mars. It is just another star that twinkles like all of them. They call earth a planet but has anyone observed the earth twinkle like Mars ?

Best photos of Mars are on Devon Island where videos show NASA Mars rovers running around taking pictures of the reddish Devon Island terrain.

The videos that they found of Devon Island were originally taken by someome using Google Earth.

Learn some science. It’s even more interesting than conspiracy theories.

Looks like you figured it out... I guess telescopes that let us see Mars are all fake too.

I am not familiar with space project among the Europe, but in my personal view, I hope to discover something new from rocks found in the Mars.

You neighboring stupid Earthlings just won’t steal anything from our planet, not now and not in your terrestrial year 2033.

Leave the Martians alone.

I wonder if they will bring back any Mars bars too.....

Nasa would be better fast-tracking the goal of boots on Mars before either Russia or China get there first and claim the planet for themselves.

Welcome to the new Space Race.

At this point it remains uncertain if such a space voyage is even survivable for humans. The amount of radiation the astronauts would be exposed to and the length of exposure to this radiation could be fatal. Nobody yet knows how to shield a spacecraft adequately while not making it too heavy to launch. Exposure to radiation will be much greater than for astronauts in Earth orbit where the Earth's magnetic field offers protection. There are also the problems of bone / muscle loss and other physical problems associated with prolonged exposure to zero gravity. It is not a simple endeavor to mount a mission to Mars for humans.

Except they never do with these types of missions. How many of them failed without backup?

How many of the unmanned JPL missions have failed to require a back-up? There are rovers on Mars that were designed for a life of 18-24 months that are still roving and returning valuable data ten years after they landed on Mars. JPL is a very special place with amazing talent, a national treasure.

A country that is concerned with bringing rocks from another planet instead of ending the poverty, racism, gun violence and social injustice first, is and will always be a spent power. Third World..

OK, and the earth is flat..

Conspiracy theories are so pathetic..

Wahahahahahahaa.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

If you say so.

Social problems will always exist, but humans were meant to explore. Life would be pretty boring otherwise.

It’s horrifying to think that some people believe this.

Having spent a significant chunk of my life flying external loads slung beneath large helicopters this new idea from NASA just warms my heart. I have been thrilled by the exploits of Ingenuity on Mars. To pull this mission off would be fantastic. I can hardly wait. It is also close to be because I know some of the people who designed and tested the parachute systems used on most of the Mar's landers. This is just cool science.

@Desert Tortoise - I still stand by my thought that the US really needs to get boots on Mars now. Your comments about Radiation exposure are valid, but then, so too were the risks of blowing yourself up when attached to a big Rocket for the Moon mission, etc., etc.

I'd Personally volunteer given the opportunity to go to Mars, especially if (a) my Life Insurance not be invalidated, (b) I'd be allowed private time from time to time (At least, I'd like to take a "dump" in private)

The West needs to get itself ahead of the Game here, and go for Mars now, before the Russians and Chinese steal the goal. Plain and simple, as this is now what we're all about again.

I don't think you understand the level of risk involved. The length of the journey to and from Mars plus the time on the planet is enough to kill a healthy individual. Scientists at NASA have been measuring the genetic damage that astronauts suffer in just six months on the ISS. The ISS is still close enough to the Earth's magnetic field to be somewhat protected from cosmic radiation and yet the astronauts suffer measurable, life shortening genetic damage. They also suffer bone and muscle loss and permanent eyesight damage. An unexpected solar flare during a mission to Mars would likely be fatal. That is the nature of cosmic radiation and so far nobody has come up with a way to protect astronauts from this.
