Big brother is here. God help us all.

So confidence in the facial recognition for vaccination status is higher than confidence of the vaccination effectiveness?

28 ( +31 / -3 )

The technology is 99.9 percent accurate even when the user is wearing a mask, according to NEC.

Lol. Nope.

There is no way its accurate when wearing a mask. This is a complete lie.

14 ( +20 / -6 )

The rabid anti-vaxxer crowd will be foaming at the mouth over this.

Great tech innovation going forward. Well done NEC.

-26 ( +8 / -34 )

No matter how many digital technologies introduced, the Japanese government will always require a print out.

23 ( +26 / -3 )

Consenting users will need to register their vaccination history and submit a photo of their face

The Second part of this makes me worry.

Am I allowed to smile on the photo?

If you live in Japan you have already done this for your resident card. And your driving license. And the passport you used to get here.

Are you allowed to smile on those? No

Is not allowing smiling an attempt to crush the will and spirit of free people by faceless bureaucracy? No

As dystopian as this sounds, its also ridiculous as its not the main issue and what we need to get out of this pandemic.

But it is a controversial technology that large companies like NEC will be happy to use the pandemic as an excuse to monetize this as necessary to use.

The ideas all nice but they cant even keep electronic coins safe in a digital purse. This can and will be hacked.

I'll put this as nicely as I can: you don't really seem to be fully aware of the consequences of this system.

16 ( +23 / -7 )

The government is introducing a "vaccine and test package" to allow vaccinated individuals to go out freely

We can already move freely without package

11 ( +14 / -3 )

That the government will know you went to that Johnny’s concert?

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

The government is introducing a "vaccine and test package" to allow vaccinated individuals to go out freely and spur economic activities.

So without submitting to Big Brother, nobody will be allowed to spur economic activities? Doesn't sound very free to me, lame Johnny's concert or not.

Even the hardcore vax authoritarians should be concerned about this, because it won't stop there if allowed to truly get off the ground.

10 ( +15 / -5 )

Another step closer to the Orwellian dystopia in which your every movement is monitored by Big Brother.

15 ( +20 / -5 )

A company (NEC?) is also developing a facial recognition payment system, linked with the credit. I am against all those facial recognition systems but I am afraid it will gradually be introduced and imposed to the society

13 ( +16 / -3 )

Bad news, but Japan is just following the trend of the world.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Big brother is watching and they need to stop with covid fear mongering as a tool to put in nanny state policing control. The pandemic is over no one getting sick like a dog. The awoken are awake and are aware by now

10 ( +15 / -5 )

The company expects the system to be used at tourist sites and event venues and help alleviate congestion and reduce labor costs.

What does this article have to do with resident cards, and driving licenses?

0 ( +7 / -7 )

your privacy and your freedom are gone

12 ( +16 / -4 )

Tourists sites and events venues people will not want to visit as much.

It does sound kind of like George Orwells 1984.

But you will need to take the mask off for a correct facial recognition which places you in danger of infection.

Either way its an invasion of your privacy.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

It is obvious that something like that would be created sooner or later as a reaction to the anti-vaxxer movement. If everyone accepted the vaccine, this would not be necessary. But alas we live in a world divided and there has to be a way to identify who is vaxxed and who isn't. Anti-vaxxers only have themselves to blame for this!

-13 ( +3 / -16 )

@paul

do not forget your morning shoot....

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Even if the 99.9% claim is right (which it's not) If we assume 8 billion people in the world, and ten percent of them using this once per week. That's over 400 million errors per year. Does that seem accurate enough?

99.9% is actually very low. Telecoms industries work toward what is known as 'five nines' or 99.999% uptime, and most achieve it, but we all can remember times the phone networks have stopped working, even at that high a number. A system like this needs to be 100% or it is useless.

This is for @Fighto!

nhk has officially reported the dangers of covid moderna and Pfizer are cause heart inflammation so all the provaxer harassing people to get jabs should repent

Just more STEM-Techno fear porn.

The Corporate Nation-State of Japan Inc. is desperately trying to keep the population docile, masked, distanced, isolated, and silent .... while the ruling elites have their way with us. They think the threat of A.I. and cameras will keep the numbers of demonstrators in the hundreds (like yesterday at Australian Embassy), or thousands (like two weeks ago in Shinjuku) ... not the tens if not hundreds of thousands you can find in videos covering Austria right now ... or in France, Spain, Greece, Australia.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Sell it to the US. We don’t need it here.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

This would alienate the unvaccinated, who might not be against vaccines. Some here blanket their comments on antivaxxers and might have inherently pointed them to other unvaccinated people as well. I guess we don’t have to patronage those places with such discriminatory policy. In the end, vaccines might help but they would still kill sometimes. Get the jabs if you are comfortable otherwise don’t force them on people. Having this kind of device is not needed here.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

@Bradley. “I wish we had something like this here but make it mandatory for the unvaccinated.” One day I think you would need to rush for boosters to use the system. I hope your dream comes true.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Facial recognition software has proven itself to be not accurate at all sometimes.

A vaccine and test package that allows individuals to go out freely ???

How can you possibly be going out freely if the government is monitoring and testing you ?

How will they justify enforcement thats the real concern.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

What does this article have to do with resident cards, and driving licenses?

Ask Monty. He was concerned about submitting a photo and being allowed to smile or not.

I was assuring him that it’s nothing for him to worry about.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Big brother is here. God help us all.

Looks like Japan is off the bucket list. I know a lottttt of vaccinated tourists who wont be comfortable with this. The penny is starting to drop about what this is REALLY about. Some of crowds Ive seen in Melbourne wouldnt have been seen since the Vietnam War era.

And all this for a virus that kills less than 1% it infects. God only knows what they would do if it is 5%.

Lock us all up, only allowed out for sun 15 minutes a day?

Done with this nonsense.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

How will they justify enforcement thats the real concern.

If you are not a consenting user (paragraph 3) it won’t concern you. Don’t worry about it.

This is Japan. There will be no mandate or lockdown. Nobody will make you use this system or get a vaccine if you don’t want to.

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin

And yet, this is all I see from the shivering, surrendering population of humans the world over, positively terrified at the thought of getting "sick" with COVID (even though the death rate of COVID to human population now stands at 0.00066% worldwide!) More checks? More passports? More invasive intrusions? Sign me up!

People are just too easy to control now...sad.

Too bad. You’d have lost it when you found out what happens at Narita. They’ve had facial recognition and finger scans for years.

Done with this nonsense.

Fair enough

Lock us all up, only allowed out for sun 15 minutes a day?

Done with nonsense but not with fantasy.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Too bad. You’d have lost it when you found out what happens at Narita. They’ve had facial recognition and finger scans for years.

I expect security at airports. Of all places, that is where you would expect the most severe security, other than say, parliament.

I dont expect facial regonition in which I have to provide a photo for a simple tourist site. I guess my expectations are outdated. Thats up to them. I wont spend money on overpriced tourist sites anymore. Good for the bottom line.

Done with nonsense but not with fantasy.

I really dont think it is fantasy given a virus that is more pathogenic than Covid.

I just dont understand why this is so necessary for a virus in which 99% survive AND for a virus in which your vaccination status increasingly means very little. 50% of Omicron cases in the U.K are double vaxxed. Your piece of paper means very, very little indeed.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Really. You think people will be locked up and allowed 15 minutes sunlight a a day?

And the media get accused of fear mongering.

How long will it be before there are fines for not registering?

Other countries do so.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

If I were vaccinated, I would boycott those places with such a thing.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

So you won’t be coming either way.

Win win.

In Japan? Never.

If NHK can’t do it no one can.

Dont go to Fuji-Q Highlands then, facial recognition at the ticketing gates, has been for years.

What comes to mind when reading articles such as this one, are Hollywood blockbusters such as Minority Report or dystopian SF-flicks from the 70s.

’What comes to mind’ is an entirely subjective opinion. Come on, the hint is in the phrase you chose.

Be seeing you! as Patrick McGoohan may say.

Yeah. The quotes are always really old. The Prisoner is old, not as old as Orwell but if your argument against current events is a really old tv show or really old book (both of which I love by the way) you need to keep up.

By "full-scale", one can only assume they want to go "national" with tourist sites being the "beginning" of the roll-out. As such, I would assume that the system will be national / global and not local (i.e. linked to one site / company / user-site), most likely through WI-FI.

Assume all you like. From a tourist site it will become a national/global wifi system (which is it? what does this mean? how does it work?)

Sounds like you’ve done some imaginative assuming.

How will my local tourist spot, most likely through ‘WI-FI’ become a…. no, you’ve lost me already.

You repeatedly say ‘one only needs to… us…we…’

Nope. Speak for yourself.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

@Bob Fosse

”So you won’t be coming either way.”

I would go to places without such discrimination. Besides, if I were vaxxed, why should I fear if the one sitting next to me is vaxxed or not.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I'm sure it'll be as successful as other Japanese app/tech attempts at controlling/tracking the virus.

Wow. Wonderful advice.

I dont like paying taxes, can I not consent to that?

I dont like the price of fruit, can I not consent to that?

You dont change things by doing nothing. You change them by doing SOMETHING.

Not exactly my advice, I was just pointing it out to those who missed it like you

It says right there "Consenting users"

Just like the vaccines, you don't like don't consent
