That's a lot of petaflops!

Bet it doesn't run Windows!

If doesn’t run Windows then it’s useless lolz!!

I'll take one if it runs Mac OS

How many number of sales of this product worldwide? If it's not thanks to Japanese tax payer and Japanese govt debt to cover price tag for this product.

Also it tops Green500 charts, and entirely run on Japanese processors

They should have either kept this quiet or should increase their cyber-security. Now a certain communist dictatorship will send out its cyber lapdogs to try and hack this supercomputer or to steal info. What's new?

I think this will be one time wonder until the next decade. Japan is not optimized to run the supercomputer race among the US, China and EU. The economic situation in Japan keeps getting worse every year. This type of wastefulness only damages taxpayers' saving.
Next year, China or the US will introduce new supercomputers, and Fugaku will drop in the rankings.
What is dubious for me to see that ARM created those chips. ARM is a Japanese company that has suspiscious tie with the Chinese Communist Party. Let's me break it down!
Softbank extended support to ARM's Chinese operations and then sold 51% controlling interest in ARM's Chinese subsidiary to a Chinese investment group for only around $775 million USD; this one act significantly boosted China's access to ARM's semiconductor technology.
ARM has grown significantly since being acquired by Softbank...its business links with ALIBABA & HUAWEI along with its strong China relations provided a boost to ARM's Chinese operations.
Investors in ARM's Chinese JV also include TSINGHUA UNIGROUP [ 紫光集团有限公司 ] a major supplier of semiconductor technology to the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Backed by Xi & the CCP, UNIGROUP in 2015 tried to acquire US-based MICRON TECHNOLOGY [ which acquired Japanese ELPIDA エルピーダメモリ株式会社 ] but they were unsuccessful due to opposition from the USG & Congress.; MICRON's chip memory technology would allow UNIGROUP to improve Chinese ballistic missile capabilities.
After failing to acquire MICRON, UNIGROUP in its efforts to improve Chinese ballistic missile performance, started turning their sights on ARM. However, any similar attempt to acquire using a Chinese firm would likely be met with opposition from both US & European governments. So, UNIGROUP turned to Softbank to use as a Trojan Horse to acquire ARM to override such objectiions.
The other coup achieved in 2018 on behalf of the CCP / PLA was successfully transferring ARM's semiconductor IPR & other tech knowhow to the Chinese JV. This gave Chinese chipmakers the ability to tap licensing technology for leading-edge technology which in particular was a major boost for Chinese ballistic missile technology firms.
A company that related to the CCP is disturbing. What is even more disturbing that Abe administration never took a critical action against China. All the talks about Hong Kong and Taiwan are meaningless if Abe does not act. Chinese influence over Japanese economy politics is more massive than we thought. I fear that the CCP is using Masayoshi Son and Keidanren to acquire core technologies from the West.

Xeno Man, FANTASTIC post! Great analysis. And very true.

Until next week

Wake me up when it can adequately translate Japanese text to English.

Japan does have a space program, JAXA. They've sent missions to the ISS, the moon and 2 asteroids. They sent a probe with landers to the asteroid Ryuku recently, and it's returning with asteroid soil - a first. I'd say that it is very important and useful.
Maybe it can.
Ooooh, this is one of those 'antichrist superthinking computers that will rule the world' to the uninitiated and this is the stuff of all those dystopian 'antichrist/technology-gone-amuck' TV episodes and cheap TV movies I remember as a kid in the 70s.

BertieWooster:
It does. It is a generic CPU based on ARM instruction sets.
Therefore, it runs LINUX, WINDOWS and others.

Perhaps YOU should put in the effort to learn Japanese?

Xeno Man:
The processor (Arm64fx) used in this new Supercomputer is designed and created by FUJITSU and RIKEN from the scratch in Japan, not by ARM Holdings (Masayoshi Son), the company you are talking about. It is entirely different from ARM Holding's processor or design. The only reason why the processor name contains "Arm" is that it uses ARM instruction set (an interface), so that it is compatible with any operating systems that use the same instruction set.
This supercomputer has nothing to do with ARM Holdings.
