Virtuoso
In my mind, that's a persuasive reason for not upgrading.
LostinNagoya
I recommend the upgrade. After every one I did, my Macs got faster.

screw social networking being preiinstalled. I usually wait a month to let the bugs be caught before upgrading. Ben burnt too many times by jumping on new Mac OSes too soon. Not that Apple ever publicises the bugs but they are there.

Agree with Virtuoso. Join a social network on the net and become spam bait, hackers paradise, stalker fodder and exposed to any idiot you would normally do your best to avoid if you saw on the street.

Turning iMac into iPad, what a great idea!
Ancalagonzzz
Not.

Installed.
No problem.
Installation went perfectly.
It's a good solid upgrade.
Well worth the 1,700 yen!

It would be useful to know what kind of upgrade path they offer for us 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) users. Those were (and are) good operating systems that still work great, but these days some programs are demanding 10.6 or newer. I'd upgrade -- assuming my 2009 iMac can run Mountain Lion -- if it were a flat $20 for anyone.

Thon, as far as I know, you can upgrade from 10.4 or 10.5 to Snow Leopard for 29 dollars and then to Mountain Lion (by passing Lion) for 19.99 - I paid 1,700 yen.
I have Mountain Lion running on an old 2009 iMac (24"). It's fast. Very nice. Integration is just superb, with Dictionary, Email, iCal, Pages, Numbers, Addresses, Safari and a whole lot more. And integration with iOS devices is superb. I can use my iPad as an extension of the computer. If I've been working on some project in another town, by the time I get back, the changes are all there on my main computer. Dictation is a great feature and works well.
Make sure you back up everything before the big leap!
If you've been running 10.4 or 10.5, 10.8 is a new machine!

Thanks, Bertie! The dictation is what I'm most excited about; I write lots of academic papers and would love to give my hands a rest. I'll have to add a whole bunch of terms to the computer's dictionary before I start, of course, but dictation would really make things easier.
Mine is the 20", 2.66 GHz machine but I have 4 GB of RAM, which was a great upgrade by itself. For a total of $49, it looks like Mountain Lion is in my future.

Thon, I've been using Mountain Lion since yesterday and love it.
There are no huge changes on the surface, but everything has been neatly tidied up and works much more smoothly. Safari is really fast.
By the way, do you use Scrivener? For writing anything, including academic papers, it's superb. That has been updated for Mountain Lion too.
