He cited wanting to keep the spirit of Twitter's text-message origins — texts can't be edited — and the confusion that could result from users making changes to a tweet that has already been highly circulated by others.

With all the screenshotting and archiving that people do and is done there is a trail of edits in most cases.

Musk started out from his parents blood emerald mine money.

But I hope he lives up to the ideas of the author he admires in his starship names, Iain Banks, who was a Scottish socialist.

It should be in the safe hands ..

Edit button? So you can something and then deny you said it. Sounds like lying to me.

True, but at the same time, screenshots can be Photoshopped. Memers have been doing that for over a decade now. Without an archived trail that is safe from manipulation, screenshots can't really be used as acceptable evidence.

People can already deny what they've said, blaming it on miscommunication or claiming someone else made the statement on the account. The majority of people who want an edit button do so just to be able to fix spelling and grammar errors, accidentally tagging the wrong people, that sort of thing. It would be especially popular with people using the mobile app since things like predictive text and autocorrect can cause all kinds of problems that sometimes get overlooked. When you're trying to post a "hot take" in the moment, you don't have time to proof-read, so errors happen.

I'd be glad to see an edit button, personally. I make mistakes in tweets, same as many users. It happens, especially in the early hours when you're tired. To address the concerns of the edit button being abused, rather than having a time limit on editing, I would propose having a publicly visible Edit History that archives the original tweet and shows what edits have been made. That way transparency is maintained without restricting edits to a window of a few minutes.

Just yesterday posters were claiming this meant nothing and Musk would have no say about anything.

Well, look at that- hello Board of Directors in 1 day and making changes already announced.

I dont like the edit button. People here always claiming "no one ever said...." is bad enough without similar people being able to go back and change the original post.

"We never said the laptop wasnt real, we said it WAS real", see my (edited) post!?

He said "major changes are coming" but we'll have to see what the CIA has to say about that . . . . .

It’s passive it’s passive! Haha nothing he can do, said haters.

ummm nope, as I said.

“Elon Musk admits his Twitter investment isn’t passive and reveals that he began buying the stock in January”

I won’t be purchasing Twitter until it’s fixed to allow speech for all, fhough.

Not a lot of Iain Banks readers here even though Musk has professed his works have had a deep influence on him.

Oh well....

Musk has professed his works have had a deep influence on him.

There are plenty enough strange people and minds in Iain M Banks' SF novels that we can wonder which ones influenced Musk. I'm a big fan of his books too, but I'm not so sure that have influenced me so much as confirmed the world is full of weirdos. I guess I'm one as well.

Bank's world of The Culture is a weird and wonderful world we could only hope to achieve one day.

Unfortunately there are so many regressive forces in society today. I hope Musk is not one of them given his out-sized influence.

Twitter says it's testing an 'edit' button

I would like to see JT doing the same.

All to often I spot a mistake in spelling in my posts after I have posted it. I would love to be able to correct it myself.

Have a five or ten minute window to make edits and any edited post must be labeled as such.

Bad idea.

A lot of insane blue checks will say one thing and then change it up a few hrs later in an attempt to deny what they first intended to say.

No edit button keeps people honest and accountable for what they tweet.

Musk is on record as a proponent of human rights and freedom of speech.

The very antithesis of socialism.

Readers, please note that "master" is using the American right-wing dialectic term "Socialism" (a regional/political boogeyman which all the world's evils can be attributed to), and not the word as the rest of the world uses it, where Socialism does not have any tenets in regards to preventing freedom of speech or human rights.

Those of us outside the America disinformation bubbles are able to understand this is why you see Socialist Democratic countries like Canada and the Nordic countries having higher economic prosperity for their people, less income disparity, higher happiness levels, higher safety levels, higher education levels, and a physically healthier populaces.

It's much easier to understand right-wing Americans when you understand that they are speaking of the boogeyman, and not anything from the real world.

Elon Musk was just revealed as the company's largest shareholder and now sits on its board.

He is now not only the richest man in the US but also the most powerful in terms of the communications field for the time being.

Biden's administration already uses an edit button on everything the POTUS says. The far left followers would love this feature.

I didn't know that, might have to reconsider my opinion of him. I've just starting reading the Culture series, it's great stuff. Can't believe I hadn't read them before.
