Just because it may have won some type of competition does not make it the "best" !
Ganbare Japan!
Exactly. Tokyo is still better than New York, and much safer. I am sceptical about this index.

Made up list by a marketing company.
"commercial data provider" ... a company who tracks people wherever they can and sells that data.

Yikes, some people are taking this way too personally. Facts literally don't care about feelings.

More innovative in... what?
I absolutely get other Asian places, from, say, South Korea or China, gaining places but NYC on top?
Tokyo's the world's most densely populated area (the size of entire Canada I believe), yet runs perfectly, everything from highways to bullet trains working in order.
Oh, and, aside from the cutting edge infrastructure, you get extremely low crime rates (hilariously lower than NYC), and almost always being spotless clean (not gonna even bother comparing the 2 here).
NYC is very overrated, in my humble opinion. There are tons of other places in the world, not just in Asia, that can eat it for breakfast.

New York is back!

Uh-oh! Innovation jealousy! Not attractive, boys!

last year ,s ranking was different, in fact, Tokyo was first. it ,s called innovation, it ,s always changing, you guys need to calm down. with that said, yes (even if it ,s subjective) Tokyo is a better city. the thing about New York is the way it was always publicized, same thing with LA for example, it ,s all fun until we actually start living there (unless we,re rich).

Do I prefer the Tokyo subway or the New York....? Hmmm

I believe ya guys are missing the point - this is just a list for innovation based on 100 indicators on transport, infrastructure, citizen privacy, green architecture, property prices, start-up office spaces and internet users, etc.
Why are ya guys talking about stuff that has not to do with innovation

What a joke ???, has anyone seen new york lately ???.

Your opinion but they didn't ask you so... Congrats to my hometown! So nice they named it twice.

Yes, but New York is so far ahead of Tokyo in terms of creativity and innovation it's painful. Music, art, fashion, design, innovation, start ups, dynamism, entrepreneurs, technology and pretty much everything else. Nowadays, Tokyo has AI and robotics (maybe) and the trains are clean and run on time. Design of small things is good. That's it.

"Music, art, fashion, design, innovation,"
Either this is ignorance or pure hate. Japan has an amazing, albeit hidden from the world, music industry, and it's one of the of the most forward thinking fashion industries. Have a walk around the world infamous Harajuku. Giorgio Armani, one of the most prolific fashion designers in the world, has many times said that Tokyo is his favourite place.
Innovation is a very lax term. Where has NYC innovated? They can't even keep their city clean...
Have a look at that new Shibuya building. Nothing looks as good in NYC.
As for start ups and the whole company thing, sure. Japan ain't got practically anything on start ups, sadly.
Americans and their superiority complex.

That's why they stated they used more than 100 indicators. That's a lot - people can't even think of more than 10. Heck, most people here can think of only 2 or 3, let alone trying to wrap their minds to 100.
Again inserting a topic that has not to do with innovation. For example, a genius inventor can have a lab that's really messy but still be very innovative.
People has to separate the idea of innovation and ignore anything else that it's not about. Because this is not a list of best overall cities - it's a list of most innovative cities. And as mentioned, they used more than 100 indicators - yet people here can only think of 2 or 3 and using only that mere 2 or 3 as the basis of their judgements (while missing the other 97-plus).
Seems people really having a hard time wrapping their minds around this.
