Dominate the road? Here’s hoping that day never comes. Some Eutopia. A few on the roads for the very wealthy, or as taxis, OK, but they had better not get in the way.

While I look forward to having my vehicle self-park after dropping me off at work or the front of a store, or come to me when I do a hike from 1 side of a mountain to the other, I don't see that happening for at least 15 more years.

Automatic controls in aircraft are at least 1000x easier than automatic driving on roads full of humans, bicyclists, trucks, accidents, police, animals, fallen trees, and assorted boxes. Plus, there will always be mischievous humans trying to break the autopilot by placing boxes in the road or even special patterns on the roadway to cause issues.

The industry should be pushing for self-driving on controlled access highways between population centers. That is a relatively simple, but still highly complex, problem to be solved. Having self-driving long-distance trucks would really help the trucking industry greatly. Have them pull over just outside cities where a human driver takes over to either handle final delivery or navigate safely around the city to the other side where the truck would take off to the next city, driverless. Trucks driving overnight from Houston to El Paso, legally, not eating into allowed "driver hours" would change the industry completely.
