Listeners across the globe can now tune into NHK World Radio Japan on an Android device. NHK has developed a new application for smartphones and tablet computers that run the Android operating system, in addition to an app for iPhones that was launched last year.
The app allows the live streaming and on-demand broadcasting of news and other Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese. The app also distributes the text of each broadcast news item in 11 of the languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Indonesian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
How to use the new app
- Search for and download NHK World Radio Japan through Google Play.
- After starting the app and choosing between “Live” (live streaming) and “Clip” (on demand), users can listen to a program they want by tapping on it. The program starts automatically.
Devices currently supported by the app are Xperia acro, Xperia Z, GALAXY SII LTE, GALAXY SIII, HTC Tattoo, SIRIUS α.
Downloading the app is free of charge but users may have to pay communication fees according to their contracts with mobile carriers.

In other news, NHK will now bill ANYONE that has an android phone for their service fee. Seriously if they dont it's a sham that they ask anyone with a TV to pay whether or not you watch their programming.

Have been able to listen to NHK World on the internet for years and some how I have resisted the temptation every day!
What is weird is how normal radio in Japan does not stream on the internet, whereas radio from nearly all other countries in the world does. Anyone know why?
