Nintendo chief says Sony portable is different

Sony made a wise choice to stay clear of a 3D display - apparently the Nintendo 3DS is quite good at giving you a headache in 3D mode.

I don't see the need for 3D in handheld consoles, even for full-screen it is a gimmick that gets old fast.

My son has a PSP3000 and don't think he will need the 3G upload function of the new model.

He also had a NDS but lost interest after he used the PSP and saw the range of games and their prices. Some of the PSP games he likes he also plays on my PS3.

Said that he got hooked on Monster Hunter on the Wii but plays more of the games from series on the PSP.

Nintendo is just way too overpriced, old tech and to few games for the average gamer. He is 10 and tired of pokemon and mario, etc.

Zemnny1; you or your son may like a cheaper alternative handheld such a smy current favourite Dingoo A320. Brilliant emulator handheld that can be linked to a telly. I have almost 800 gams on mine inclusing all NEo Geo AES games and mosr PC Engine. As these games licenese have expired it is great way to have a blast from the past at little cost.

3D is a gimmick, the technology dates from 1988, but wasn`t affordable until recently, many of the new games are in fact almost direct 3D versions of N64 titles.

Hmm? Nintendo tends to be cheaper than everyone else, and they specifically target the "average gamer". The Wii kind of sucks but I can't imagine a general fan of games who can't find a ton of titles they like on a DS. PSP is great, too, but I think the titles are a little less broad, a bit more towards the more serious gamer.

To me, they occupy different niches. It sounds like this will again be the case in the next iteration. That's a good thing for us consumers, I think!

Agree the target audience differs but when 10yr olds are tired of Pokemon, Mario, Donkey Kong they lost a large part of their audience.

Compare the 3DS to the NGP when its released and get back to me on that. Comparing the latest Nintendo product to a console that was released 5 years ago isn't exactly a fair comparison.

Wii - 25000 on release. PS3 - 60000. NDS - 15000 on release. PSP - 19800.

I will stick with my PS3. Cheapest Blue-ray playeralso does 3D and much more plus gaming) I could get, etc more of a PC than a Game console.

Check what you get for the money and not the price only. My 320Gb PS3 cost me 35.000Yen(New). My son had Wii which I got for 20.000Yen(New) and it pales compared to what the PS3 offers.

Ditto for the NDS and so far no-one is interested in the 3DS.

Those games are most definitely NOT license free. PC Engine and AES titles are still sold on compilations and through legal emulation services such as Wii Ware. But you cannot legally play them on one of those emulator consoles.

AFAIK the only system whose games are legally license free are Vectrex, and that's because the owner of the copyright expressly allowed their free use a few years ago.

I'm sure Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft would love to know they don't have to pay license fees for the games they sell. It would be huge news to them.

Smorkian Rubbish, check it out yourself. Only a handfull of MD gams and SNRS titles are illegal to emulate as they are still copyrighted, all nES games were out of coptright in 2004. Emilation is for prsonal use not selling, licenses have different meanings.

Smoekion; Using and selling is different in case you dont get it. Nw PSP price tag is estimated ar 40-50,000yen and it will fail at that price. Good piece of hardware so im told though. My mate has been developing for it and has a prototype.

I suggest you call SNK Playmore as there is no company called "Neo Geo". The last (licensed) AES game was released in 2003 (KOF 2003) - you're telling me a game released slightly over 7 years ago is out of copyright?

Smorkian; if you think you know more about the industry and legal aspect than i do, then you are vry wrong. I know it is now SNK Playmore and the company never was called Neo Geo. KOF 2003 is ok to emulate not reproduce two far different matters. KOF 2003 was released in 2002 actually. The only country that has any problems with private individuals downloading old titles for personal use is the USA which insists you also own the software.

NES copyright expired in 2004 which does not mean you can copy and sell but emulation is legal.

As for law, Nintendo decided and statd on its website that selling used games was illegal and took Sofmap to court and lost. Took makers of Actio Replay to court for SNS as it was "illegal".

I know what you are referring to and it is illegal. Look it up. There is no fair use exception for videogames. Copyrights most definitely have not expired, anywhere.

Of course you can make 3rd party (unlicensed) games for older consoles. You can't legally emulate released games, though. Most everyone does it but it is not legal.

I realize that Nintendo has an agenda. I am no lawyer, either, but it is very clear that using roms for games you do not own is not legal. I don't think it's unethical, to tell you the truth, though I own tons of classic games (real deal).

IF you are a supposed expert (ahem) then I will say to you - show me where it is legal to emulate older games. Give me court rulings, legislation. Put your expertise to use. I gave you a statement from one of the big hitters's legal departments, you've just said "trust me, I am an expert".

TechRadar UK's own review of the Dingoo A320 says the roms are illegal. As this is a UK site I would assume they knew something about applicable UK law, no?

Pales for whom? I didn't like the Wii offerings myself but so many do. The Wii has sold 2x the PS3 worldwide so someone is buying them. I have both PSP and NDS and play the PSP a bit more, though probably older consoles (NG Pocket!) a bit more still.

I'm glad there's so much variety in consoles. There's something for everyone, really.
