Nintendo has held a lock on the handheld gaming market for a long time. I think many people viewed the switch as a handheld more than an actual gaming console. Also, their sales models on the games themselves have been impressive. They stick to their base but they make generation appropriate upgrades in order to make the same thing fit with new generations. Their games constantly have that old but new feel.

Nintendo's lack of diverse games and high price point have definitely hurt their sales.

On top of that, with Nintendo shutting down emulation sites around the world, it has left a negative image of the company with hardcore gamers.

I was just playing kinnikuman on XBox with the kids last night. The old remote controls are more responsive than WiiU and Switch controllers.
