PlayStation 4 leads jump in U.S. console sales

Sony's PlayStation 4 led a surge in console sales that lifted the U.S. video game market in April, said figures released Thursday by market research firm NPD Group.

Sales of video game hardware, mostly consoles, jumped 76% to $192.8 million during the month compared to a year ago, more than offsetting a 10% drop in sales of game software to $227.9 million, NPD reported.

Overall video game sales rose 17% to $580.3 million from the same month last year, according to NPD.

PS4 was the top-selling console for the fourth consecutive month, followed by Microsoft's Xbox One.

"Titanfall" was the top-selling game, followed by "Call of Duty: Ghosts."

NPD estimated that the total spent in the U.S. on video games topped a billion dollars during the month after adding in rentals, mobile apps, social network play, subscriptions, digital downloads, and other non-traditional revenue channels.

Microsoft said Tuesday it would sell a reduced-price version of its Xbox One console without the Kinect motion detection system.

The move comes with Microsoft locked in a tough battle with Sony, which has been leading the game console market with its next-generation PlayStation 4.

The Xbox without the Kinect motion system is pointless as Microsoft has been using this as the central selling point. Why not keep the price the same, but offer more in terms of service and/or quality. They can start by being more competive with their online monthly fee. I still haven't seen the Playstation yet, I've been meaning to check it out but have been too busy! Can't wait to see if the games are worth the upgrade from PS3.

They can start by being more competive with their online monthly fee.

"The MSRP of Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus is the same - $9.99 per month. Microsoft, however, doesn’t really encourage gamers to join on a monthly basis. Instead, they encourage yearly subscriptions at a deep discount that are now down to $39.99 per year from some retailers, which is about $3.30 per month. Technically the MSRP for Xbox Live is $59.99 per year, but you’ll rarely have to pay that unless, perhaps, you buy from a brick-and-mortar store, or if you sign up directly from the console itself.

Sony also encourages yearly subscriptions, but the rate is $49.99, and hardly ever seeing it discounted. This works out to about $4.16 per month."
