He's right to condemn Trump but he could look a little closer to home as well for indifference to refugees that will make him cry.

absolutely. EXCELLENT point.

And if it made him cry, he can always employ some of them the way starbucks has announced they would do.

Refugees per 1000 inhabitants in mid-2015: (full list here: http://tinyurl.com/nfcqwhk wikipedia list of countries by refugee population )

Sweden 14.66

Switzerland 8.45

Canada 4.19

France 4.13

Germany 3.10

...

USA 0.84

...

Japan 0.02

What is he even talking about? Japan makes every excuse and monetary reward possible to make sure refugees cannot be admitted to Japan. Allowing only a small, administratively non-zero amount. Less than 30 a year?

Japan is Trump's dream

My Japanese FB friends have posted articles about how the UK, US etc. are dragging their feet on refugees. I like to post, "How about Japan take some to fill up its dying rural communities? They invariably ignore my posts. Like, zero response, doesn't compute in their minds.

The have zero recognition of the double standard involved in this issue.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

he's not a politician. he was talking out of natural human compassion in a situation like this, and also for some positive publicity for his business.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

The selling of ivory make me cry. Japan's stand on refugees makes me cry.

Nothing but a ploy to get notice and business from abroad. That makes me want to scream.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

There's a number of predominantly Muslim countries not on the ban list, which would go some way to reinforce the assertion that it's not about religion.

Still sucks though.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I agree. Japan has no room to talk on this issue.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

"Oh look, everyone is against Trump's ban...looks like I'll virtue signal on Twitter to show other people I care...look at me guys! I'm crying!"

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Nordeic503: I agree. Japan has no room to talk on this issue.

Only that it is not Japan talking but one person who happens to be the president of a private enterprise and thus he is representative neither of the country nor of its government.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Fake tears, if you really care hire some Muslim refugees and sponsor them into Japan. I like how he was also able to work in free publicity for their call and messaging app Viber into the article not once but twice. Also what does Harvard, Stanford and Yale have to do with Muslims being more vigorously screened after a 90 day period to review and revise the current process?

Mikitani san, Your comments won't help your business in the U.S.

Crocodile tears.

Hopefully very soon the US courts will overturn everything Trump does illegally including all those with lawful visas and green cards who were turned away.

Republicans who endorse King Trump have no place in a rule of law court based society

“I am very sad to see what is happening now in the U.S. I came to U.S. when I was seven and I really respect big American big heart,” said Mikitani, "

We still have a big heart. Now we're going to use our brain for a while and see how that works. If you feel so bad about "refugees," there is nothing stopping you for opening up your wallet and sponsoring yourself.

Shameful, shameful publicity stunt.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Didn't Mr.Mikitani move his entire family to the US following the 3/11 earthquake and nuclear meltdown?

While his criticism of Trump is laudable ( and rather surprising for a Japanese businessperson ) he should indeed be looking closer to home for "the fascism of indifference".

You guys can't resist any chance to take a swipe at Japan. This has nothing to do with Japan. I'm sure he knows very well how few refugees Japan takes in. The point is he feels a close connection to the US because he also lived there and has good memories of it so it makes him sad how far they've fallen.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

They don't have any space.

Ever been to Tohoku, Hokuriku or Shikoku ?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I believe he has business interest in Muslim countries. Yeah, Viber was widely use by Muslims. If he was really sad about Muslim refugees ban news and then he should donate 7 digits numbers money to Syria refugees in Syria. They need more assistance than the refugees who want to go to US.

Why oil rich Middle East Arab countries do not take their cousin Arab refugees? Why Muslim refugees only want to go to Australia, Canada, UK, Germany and US even thought they do not accept the culture, religion, traditional and the way Westerners live? I don’t say Trump was right but he has the reasons to ban peoples from those 7 countries entering US.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

MeLuvULongTimes:

The temporary ban is based on the countries that present the highest terror threat levels

This is simply not true. Saudi Arabia is full of would-be terrorists, yet they are free to travel to the US. Please explain why they are not banned. I suggest it's because Trump puts business interests ahead of the safety of US citizens.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Hate to say it, but if he is tweeting in English, shouldn't he have the English checked first before posting?

0 ( +4 / -4 )

@brbush So, tell Abe to accept the refugees instead.

How's Russia doing with regard to taking in Syrian refugees? Russia claims it's there to help Syria so I have to assume it's taking in refugees, especially those made homeless because of Russian bombing.

"I really respect big American big heart"

Unfortunately, the man who occupies the White House is heartless.

"There's a number of predominantly Muslim countries not on the ban list, which would go some way to reinforce the assertion that it's not about religion."

77bro: The countries not on the ban list are more about Trump's personal business interests.

What's wrong. He's a guy with some status talking about something that's wrong. No need to pounce on'em

The last part about the universities and stuff threw me tho.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

How about supporting all of your staff regardless of religion? Quite a large number of refugees are not muslim!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

It is pretty sad that many of you mentioned that he has no right to talk because he is Japanese and Japan does not welcome (almost) every refugees. Why people tell others that they have no right to talk based on their origin?

I think I understand him. For him, US is great in term of freedom and respect. And yes he respect and believe in that so he doesn't expect that most of American will only concern about themselves. I do not mean that you cannot just think about yourself, about your country but that's not what US used to be. Just that... I guess

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Double irony here. The irony of a Japanese fretting about refugees and refugees banned by the same country that created them in the first place.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hey, Mikitani!

Japan sends thousands of refugees to die back home every year! Doesn't that make you wanna cry?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Seems to me, that if he would read the Quran for himself, and learn what Muslims are actually taught to believe, he would be more informed as to what ought be the appropriate action regarding followers of this religion.

(and that is about as "politically correct" as I can get...)

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Boohoo. Indonesians and Egyptians are not banned, so it's not a religious thing, per se. Miki's fallen into the same trap of anyone who thinks that this is about religion and trying to keep out ALL immigrants. Soooo, he has a degree from Harvard?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Japan bashers everywhere. The topic of the story is about the U.S ban on immigration.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

The temporary ban is based on the countries that present the highest terror threat levels as previously determined by the Obama administration. It is NOT based on religion as Mikitani claimed. Also Japan Airlines is supporting Trump's ban and are to begin screening passengers from the seven countries on the banned list. Officials at Japan’s second biggest carrier will contact the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency when passengers from those countries check in at the airport before departure to confirm whether they will be allowed entry, a spokesman for the airline said. If JAL is informed that the passengers in question are subject to the entry ban, it will advise them before boarding. The airline is requesting that passengers booked on U.S.-bound flights arrive at airports well in advance of their departure. #MAGA

Mikitani san, Your comments won't help your business in the U.S.

That's correct. Thou shalt not take thy lord's name in vain.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

It's only for 90 days people.....really all this over the US doing a review of its immigration procedures? Talk about short sighted hypocrites.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Boo-hoo! Maybe he needs a box of Crayons, a coloring book, some Play-Doh, and a security blanket.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Japan is a small nation, while the U.S is a vast continental superpower. The Americans should be the ones taking in refugees, Not Japan. They don't have any space.
