blackrock: That hasn't been true for a while. Each new standard has just been a war between corporations as to who can jam their patents in there so they can profit off the next generation, instead of picking the best technical solution. It's been like this since GSM. Even if there were no patents, corporations would still need to compete on technical solutions.

Software and standards patents need to die. Yesterday. It's all a massive scam to keep any innovative new players out of the business, and keep the big entrenched corporations in their comfortable positions.

The point of patents was for companies to be able to recoup their investment costs and also profit off them for a while. It doesn't take long for them to recoup and profit. Right now patents last 20 years. In this day and age, you can't tell me that a company cannot make massive profits off their technology patents in 5 years.

The only way they can't, is whatever it was they created is just bad and no one wanted it. That or other companies didn't want it around, so they work to kill it off. Rambus comes to mind. It was fast, real fast. Then came DDR, which still wasn't as good. It of course didn't survive, cause no one wanted to pay licensing fees to Rambus and DDR became the standard. Course even with all that, Rambus still recouped their investment costs, made profit, and is still around today (successor of RDRAM is XDR, used in PS3s).

No. You are mistaking the trolling patents by Apple with true technological patents. Those patents are what encourage research labs & scientists to invest & innovate, why protect themselves from thieves (ala copycats). Trolling bulls patents must die ffs.

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I think electronic device patents should only last 5 years. Technology advances too quickly for these stupid patents to hold it back.
