If you live in Japan, you can't buy one anyway. Like other things foreign, the domestic producers twist the arms of retailers to keep out competition. You will not find a Samsung television in any Japanese electronics store.

I wouldn't mind buying a new Samsung if I could get one, they cost about 1/3 what a Japanese set costs here, and are every bit as good. But then again, a Japanese TV costs about 40% more in Japan than it does in America, largely because there is no competition for the market in Japan.

I'm sure in South Korea Samsung has some kind of backroom deal with the government to use that 'snooping' technology but it's only now out in the open because someone in North America I believe took the time the read the fine print and interpret what it actually meant.

You can buy a Samsung phone in Japan. But thier market share in Japan has dropped significantly to 4 %, you'd better hurry.

Aha! Very plausible story... Fortunately, I don't have a Samsung's smart TV. In these modern days, I think we'd better be aware of "Tubes have ears," to say nothing of "Walls have ears."

Smart TV are not really smart unless they can transmit the smell of Tempura or Ramen to Viewers. Samsung has successfully marketed OLED TVs world wide. The Mistakes of Panasonic, Sony, and Sharp was investing too much on Plasma TVs.

This is really nothing new except for Samsung being up front about it from the start. Most cable boxes have the audio/video spyware. Almost every tablet/cellphone especially with the video/camera ability will have it.
